Need help from those who fly around San Francisco

Recommended Posts

I'm planning a long x/c trip to San Francisco (will req overnight stay) and I'm looking for small airport that is outside Bravo airspace...so maybe a nice, small airport in Echo airspace? I heard there is an airstrip with an adjioning hotel, but my contact cannot remember where it is.

Hoping someone knows where it is, or can recommend something.

Trip is for mid to late August.

Hayward Executive(KHWD) might be your best bet to get close to the city. It's a little outside San Francisco but Half Moon Bay(KHAF) has hotels & lots of nice restaurants within walking distance of the airport. Just park up at the southern side of the airport and walk through the little gate at the end and there's lots of stuff right there. It's really nice there.

Excellent! Thank you. 4 of us are flying down there (2 CFI's and 2 students). Gonna have our dinner meeting to plan the trip next week.

Man, I'm jealous! Are you taking the 44 down there?

Nope. 2 ships....not really a "formation flight"...we'll have adequate seperatation.

I am not EVEN gonna guess what this is gonna do to my account. $$$$$$$. Oh well....it'll be incredible experience and well worth it.

I can't wait! Good group going, too. Bummer to girls, cuz I gotta get myself a room, AND cover my CFI's....the other 2 can share. Not fair. Oh well.

I would check out San Carlos...isnt there a hotel on the east side ?? Its also just a 15 minute walk to the train, then you can go into SF from there.

Try Concord. KCCR (class D)

There is a nice Sheraton (or whatever it is this year, it always changes haha) RIGHT AT the field.

Stop in and say "HI" to Chuck and Larry at Bristow from Sebastian. :)

Ditto to this! Larry is the best, love the Irish-accent, lol :)

That would be my recommendation as well. Just because you fly further South, go past the city and see more of the bay area. The hotel is on the other side of the airport fence, actually on the west side. If you were to come into San Carlos you'd have to get on Caltrain and then transfer onto bart (our train system). Whereas at Concord you could just walk down to the bart station.

Thanks for all the great info. We've decided on an airport...Petaluma. Several hotels within a mile. I think that after 8 hours of flying, we'll all be pretty tired and not up to "sightseeing". So the plan is to overnight in Petaluma, then fly around SF 1st thing in the morning, then head back home.

Anyone know off hand if we can fly around the Golden Gate Bridge? (Yes, I know how to look that up, but frankly I just got home and I'm a lazy cow).

Hell, I've met pilots that flew under it.
