r22butters
I just noticed that the signal flare I carry (as per. 91.205b(12)), expires this month (just in time for the 4th, hmm,... ). Anyway, I have been carrying an Orion, hand-held, "Marine" flare, so I was wondering if there are any "specifically Aviation" flares out there, that I should be carrying instead? Also,...is renting an aircraft considered "for hire"? I'm not earning any money, but the helicopter sure is.

Well, if you carry the flare to meet this section, and you need to use it, you will be closer in definition to a boat than an aircraft, so I suggest you stick with USCG approvals. You renting an aircraft in itself is not "for hire" operations....what you do with that aircraft may earn you "compensation" which would then define what section(s) you need to comply with.
