Flint950 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Beginning August 1st, 2014 the rules change for obtaining your ATP. FAR 61.156 spells out the new requirements. In brief: - ATP applicants must present a graduation certificate from an approved flight school certifying completion of 30 hours of ground school in the subjects of aerodynamics, weather, air carrier operations and leadership.- Additionally, applicants must have 10 hours in a flight training device (simulator) reviewing stalls, upset recovery, navigation and auto pilot usage. If you have completed your ATP written BEFORE August 1st, 2014, these new requirements do not apply and you have two years to take your ATP checkride. (FAR 61.155(14)(d) I have also heard the flight simulator must represent an aircraft with a max gw of 40,000 lbs. (I was not able to confirm this detail) Best of luck and fly safe Quote
Bootcamp Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 My understanding is that they only change the requirements for AMEL ATP. What I can't seem to get a straight answer on is whether or not that written exam is good for two years if I already use it to take the ASEL ATP exam. And, if it's not still good, can I take ANOTHER airplane written exam and use that within the next two years? (Currently, there is a separate written exam for each category, but not each class.) palmfish Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 For eligibility, 61.153 (e) states, "(e) After July 31, 2014, for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category multiengine class rating or an airline transport pilot certificate obtained concurrently with an airplane type rating, receive a graduation certificate from an authorized training provider certifying completion of the airline transport pilot certification training program specified in §61.156 before applying for the knowledge test required by paragraph (g) of this section;" This is the title of 61.156... "§61.156 Training requirements: Airplane categorymultiengine class rating or airplane type rating concurrently with airline transport pilot certificate." There are no such changes listed for any other category/class. Quote
aeroscout Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 If what the OP says is true, then outside of a 121 operation (FW), getting an ATP will be exponentially more difficult. The most difficult obstacle will be the 40,000lb A/C or sim. Quote
ospreydriver Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Taking the written test will give you two years to get qualified for the flight evaluation. Just get it done by Aug 1. Don't call this weekend. I'll be working on my Sheppard Air gouge. Quote
