terrya Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Hello All,Terry from Australia. Can someone advise me where to buy an oil catch can and fittings for my R44 Are there different brands, which one is best suited and what are they to buy and who is the supplier?Happy if someone can help.Machine pushes a reasonable amount out of breather, maybe 3/4 of a qt per hours running. Seems to change depending on running conditions. It's a waste and makes a mess of undercarriage.Only fill to 7 qt on stick not 9. our days can be hot so I have not tried to run with less oilCheersTerry Quote
lelebebbel Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) You might want to talk to an engineer about this. From what I was told, this amount of oil loss through the breather isn't normal even in an R44, and could indicate that you have excessive crank case pressure, possibly from piston ring blow-by. You could have one or more cracked- or worn out piston rings, or a hooped cylinder. Compression tests alone also aren't all that reliable at detecting these issues. 500E Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 lelebebbelYou are correct regarding comp test's, that much blow by suggests problem with rings or cylindersWe do comp test & leak down testAlso blow-by is another way using a flow meter ( this is not a book procedure)This is a way to see how a trend is developing, before & after doing rings etcDividing an engines maximum horsepower output by 50 will give you a ballpark number for how much blow-by you would normally expect to see. MLH Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Terry, Sounds like you are doing everything correctly, must be a temperature thing like you said. I always filled to the lower yellow mark and never had problems, max summer temps where I did most of my flying rarely exceeded 90 degrees F. Mike Quote
