Shawn Matern said he was inside his parents' house when he heard a loud boom. "That's when we came out and saw the second explosion right before our eyes," he said. He said he saw the pilot roll out of the burning helicopter on the ground and a neighbor went to try to help. "A couple of our neighbors went over the river to see how he was doing," Matern told WBIR. "The guy asked him 'Are you still with me?' And [the pilot] just shook his head, he raised his hand and the next few minutes he passed away." This brings back the issue of post crash fires. Occupants surviving the crash but not the fire... We have the technology to avoid most of these type post-crash fires. It was done in Vietnam, during the later stages of that war.
