I'm not familiar with the area, but why not go a little higher and look around? Is there a route to where you're going that doesn't require you to overfly a cloud deck?

 

If you have to fly that exact leg, why not do it higher (than 4100' over a 3000' mountainous pass) so you can clearly see across the deck. If you had to do so, you could pick and reach a forced landing area.

 

Do not fly up the middle of a valley. You half the space to turn around.

 

Do not approach a ridge or weather on a perpendicular. Approach on as shallow an angle as possible with your turn to abort clear of obstacles.

Butters if you were in the passenger seat in the back what would you have said to those guys? Would you have screamed and cussed them out? Or would you have hijacked the helicopter at that point?
