Sparks Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Sleep at the weekends? I really want to proceed and do my ppl asap but where am i going to get the money from? I am doing a full time college course, i have a part time job which gets me £75 a week ($150). I also, have a car to run and i need to keep my equipment updated for my band. I always take up any extra work i can get but its still no where near enough. My parents cant afford it and i cant get credit. Where to get the money from? Where did you guys get your funds from? Saving? Loans? Illegal drug trafficing? Both my grandparents have said that they would help me out because they are both in very good positions financially and we are very close, but i cant just walk in and say can you help me out now. I was talking and mentioned that i wanted to do my ppl this summer and she said she would "sort that out for me financially", but i dont know whether that was just a nice thing to say or whether she is actually going to help me. How can i ask without asking if ya get what i mean? I feel embarrassed and rude Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I'm afraid I can't help you with your grandparents. I never, ever interfere in a family situation, because it's always a losing proposition. I did more or less that when I was in college - morning classes, most finished about noon, and then I drove a truck until late at night, and did the homework/reading on the weekends. I had no well-off grandparents to help, though, and got my pilot's license for free with the help of my rich uncle, named Sam. All he wanted in return was a few years' slave labor, getting shot at in exotic southeast Asia locales. I don't know how to advise you. Quote
Sparks Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 Yeah, well today i tried to stick my foot in and asked my mother to just ask for me. I need some sort of gameplan and its hard without knowing what i have to spend. All i need is an interest free loan or something to see me through college. I have just phoned about a new job weekday evenings which is high paying (for my age) but im not sure if i will get it or not. It would be perfect because of the hours. I am awaiting the call back...you know...the one that never actually happens I dont really want to go through the military...not my thing i suppose, and i dont like the length that you have to sign up for. I like to be a little more free. Quote
AndrewT Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Well, you're working now, yeah? Maybe You can make a deal with your grandparents that you pay what you can and they cover the rest? And what about the flight school you're flying with, do they need help? Perhaps you can work something about with them that every 4 days (or whatever) you work there, you get a free hour of flight. Of course, you could always try to track down kiera knightly and ask her to pay for you....but since I gave you that gem of an idea, you'll have to give her my number when you see her Quote

Kid, if anyone needs to go into the military and do a little growing up it is you. Quote

LB11 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 My advice would be to pick what means the most to you and stick with that. You mentioned band, college, car, heli schooling. Unless your one of the very few lucky people to have money for whatever they want, then you probably wont be able to do it all. As for the grandparents...those who can ask for money, get it. Those who cant, dont.... (this is a life lesson here as it applies to anything) Just ask them, the worst that will happen is they say no. I cant see any reason to be embarrased. Quote

I cant see any reason to be embarrased.I dont know what means the most to me at the moment. Im also trying to get canadian citizenship which a just another 'little' thing to think about. Car- Need it whether i like it or not to get to work, college band practise etcBand- A passion that i devote alot of time into and really enjoy doing but also costs money. The helicopter is perhaps the most important choice i will have to make because that is a potential career. Im in a bit of a situation where im forcing myself down a tight path with one thing leading to the next. Im only in college (and not in full time work) because it will get me 10 points out of the 70 odd required to apply for canadian citizenship (which im serious about). Also, it is a good qualification on my cv's and its a back up incase i have an irregular heart beat or something that is going to mean i cant get a class 1 medical....there are many permutations that could prevent me getting my desired pilot career. I dont want to be at college, and if all goes to plan i would have only done it for the citizen thing. I could be out earning a full time wage and be closing in on that cpl money whilst i am still living at home and have relativly low outgoings. I asked my grandparents and they ummm and said they needed to speak to my parents, whether thats just to make sure im serious about it, or a polite way of saying Foxtrot Oskar, i dont know. So, my current lifeplan in a nutshell: 1. Finish this college crap (2 years)2. Get a full time job3. Do PPLH4. Carry on with full time job until i have enough to either:a) Get into canada as a 'skilled worker' Do cpl and THEN try and get into canada that way. For now i will just keep buying lottery tickets Quote
Bristol Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Sparks, What's the big deal getting a Canadian citizenship? You don't like being English? I'm not busting your ass, just curious. Bristol Quote

BristolIts not that i dont like being english necessarly, its just canada has more to offer for me and i have always wanted to live there or in the US. Its just my interests i suppose. Helicopters + jobs = Canada >UK I enjoy ice hockey, which is very low level here and i also play roller hockey but cant really get anywhere in this country. I also go shooting but again, the gun laws here make it so difficult and expensive. Unlike just going to a gun range out there. So, the main reason is the helicopters, but i would really much rather live in canada than here. Quote
ADRidge Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Why a canadian and not US citizenship? Sorry if that's a dumb question... I know jack about coming to this country. As for meaningful advice, I have very little. If you want meaningless advice, I can help you. Here goes: Seems that out of your three big money-eaters, music sounds like the first one to go, unless you could stand to do something other than fly. Unless you're in a band that has booked gigs and isn't relegated to "garage band" status, I'd say just go acoustic for a couple of years (assuming you're not the drummer) and focus on flying. I'm getting my folks to help out a bit, but I really had to keep pressing the issue, to show some serious dedication. And not just "mom, can you help me out with flight school?" kind of questions... next time you see them, just start chatting them up about helicopters "Hey, did you know that......?" and just show alot of interest. It helps alot and shows a more serious interest than "Hey can I have money?" Quote

The USA basically have closed doors to alot of countries, especially UK. The only reason they let people into the country is to help them get a better life and out of povety. I am not the drummer by the way, i play guitar We have done 2 gigs so far and hope for more! My dad has a fixed wing PPL and he is being very supportive but he cant afford to help me, so thats why i asked my grandparents. They are yet to get back to me on that one. Quote
