Nomad9 Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Hi everyoneI have heard some questionable business practices by Silver state. Does anyone know if it is a good school. Heard about some lawsuits. Are they merited or are the complaints unwarrented? Thank you for any info. : Quote
mechanic Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Not to be ugly, but if you use the "search" feature at the top right hand side you will return hours of reading on SSH! Later Quote
james28 Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 i don't know, but i just saw their commercial on tv and i'm definitely going there. only kidding. yea, ssh is a school i would put on the back burner of the list, or even off the list. like mechanic said check out the search, there have been quite a few postings on them, few of which are positive. Galadrium Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Not only is SSH a place to avoid. Avoid places that use the same marketing model. Flooding the airwaves with advertising about how much money you will make flying helicopters, then wanting payment in full for training, etc. Quote
RotorWeed Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 The really good schools that I’ve flown with over the years didn’t need to advertise on TV and radio to attract students. They had more then they could handle. Plus they all treated my like I was a human being not just another student loan. My 2 Cents Quote
fry Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Hi everyoneI have heard some questionable business practices by Silver state. Does anyone know if it is a good school. Heard about some lawsuits. Are they merited or are the complaints unwarrented? Thank you for any info. : A recent news piece about SSH's lawsuits is at the thread "Silver State Lawsuits". Obviously the plaintiff students believe the suits have merit and company believes they do not. Aside from the lawsuits, this is probably not a good time to be borrowing $70k and handing it over...with no security...to a flight training company. Money lenders are in turmoil right now with all the angst about the subprime mortgage market. That may translate into a general lessening of lenders' willingness to make any kind of risky loans...like unsecured training loans. I believe SSH's lender is Student Loan Xpress. SLX is a subsidiary of CIT Group, a large publicly held lender, but "Liberty Bank, N.A. is the originating lender of the Career Xpress Loan"; i.e., the non-federally guaranteed flight training loans. Liberty is a small privately-owned Ohio bank with just $180m in assets. I would think, given the small asset base, that Liberty Bank's porfolio of unsecured student loans is probably up to the maximum they're willing to lend given the current market. The loan funds of SSH's students are fully advanced to SSH within six months of the student starting the program. A program that, according to SSH, generally takes at least 18 months. That means SSH receives the cash long before it has to pay it out for the students' training. If SSH squirrels away this cash for the future costs, no problemo. But, if they don't and they spend it on other things (like marketing or building other non-training operations) they will have to get new cash from somewhere in order to pay for training ops. If the source of cash is new student loans then SSH is very much at the mercy of the credit market's willingness to make loans. It does not seem to me to be a good time to be making unsecured loans to a privately held business...i.e., the student borrowing from the bank and lending it to SSH. Quote

Pitch Pitch Pull! Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 If your in Southern Cali check out Civic Helicopters in Carlsbad, or Helicopter Academy in Murrieta.Hello to all. I am a little late to this thread but I need to ask. Does anyone have an opinion on Universal Air Academy? I noticed that there are two training schools with similar names. I am looking for input on the school in El Monte CA. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. Quote
