When I purchase my own helicopter one day, I will be very interested in looking at the quietest one of the bunch as I will be keeping it on my property and I don't want to upset the neighbors.

Which of the following helicopters, The R44, EC120, or MD520N is the quietest? I searched around on google but could not find any noise comparisons.

Wow....tough call. The R44 Raven II is an extremely quiet ship, but so is the 520. Different sound though, the 520 has a higher pitched whistle as it flies by...The EC claims it is 6.6 db below the ICAO limit....all 3 are quiet compared to ships 10-15 years ago....but all 3 have very different limitations. I cant recall the 520 VNE, but the 120 really goes...I think VNE is 150 knots or so.,

If your not looking for a noise complant I'd suggest going for a fenstrom tail system.. besides the NOTAR it is going to be quieter than a conventinal system .. The Exposed tail rotor system is the sourse of much of the noise of the helicopter...

I found a FAA Doc from the 70's here is the reference:

And a PDF doc from the folks at ROTOR mag..

FLy neighborly...

the quietest is the one that is not flying.... Otherwise... the overall sound of a piston engine helicopter is more "clanky"... sorry bad description... like a tractor trying to fly.

A turbine ship may have a louder noise signature due to the overall size of the aircraft/load factor on the blades, but it seems quieter...

I would pick the 520 notar, but the 120 would probabally compete head to head......

I also give props to the 520 with it's 5 bladed main rotor.... more blades isn't necessarily quieter but it gives a less annoying whop whop whop.... again with the descriptions. Like comparing a jetranger to a 500.... the 500 maybe just as loud but is less anoying with its buzz.

520N by far. Anything with the NOTAR. I've worked around all the ones your talking about. But the 520N is a beast. now the 902 MMMMMMM sweet as they come lots o power. yum yum. in fact I had a 902 fly over my house yesterday. Quite by helicopter standards.

What do you mean when you say "but the 520N is a beast"?

I think that he was refering to the fact that the 520N has a tail like a manx cat ...

FAT and STUBBY..

Maybe the handling characteristics? I dunno.. Always seemed fat in the a$$ to me..

Dream to fly I'd like to hear..

I prefer french fenstrom's to H.H's hot air..

LOL hahaha

Does anyone here know how the noise level of 300cbi compares to an R44?

Theres a considerable difference in an older Raven and Astro, versus a newer Raven or Raven 2 also. The exhaust was redesigned (I think in 04) to deflect up rather than down, as well as redesigned blades, which makes an enormous difference in the noise level. I was amazed when I first hear the difference. Plus the new ships just sound BETTER.

With my Raven II at 500 AGL and some blade slap, I still have difficulty getting the attention of those indoors who are not expecting me.
