JDHelicopterPilot Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Yeah well just one problem. My Astar doesn't have any velcro on the skids. I don't see that happening in human piloted helicopters. Quote
nbit Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Yeah well just one problem. My Astar doesn't have any velcro on the skids. I don't see that happening in human piloted helicopters. By the same token, AStar's don't use RAST, but other helicopters do. Also, the article said they're getting rid of the Velcro, IIRC. ...Not making a case for or against it. Just trying to keep an open mind and thought it was interesting. Many said men couldn't fly... Quote
Eric Hunt Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 How much collective do you need to pull to take off, though? It would be an interesting sight when the velcro finally lets go and the machine launches, especially if one skid lets go before the other! And helo manufacturers would need to redesign their crosstubes and attachments, which are only designed for positive forces. The plane hanging on the prop was tried in the 50s, but was an abject failure because the pilot couldn't see enough visual cues for a good hover, despite having a seat that rotated in the cockpit to reduce the lie-on-your-back-and-peer-over-your-shoulder factor.
