Goldy Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Hello Everyone, Wondering if I need to get any kind of insurance, outside of my health insurance, while a student working toward my PPL? That depends on your school. Most have a deductible of 10K or so that you are responsible for. Read the fine print, even if you dont have a contract most schools have some standard conditions under which you fly. Most schools have a deductible pool that you can buy into...like $300 bucks a year, and then they will cover the deductible. Bottom line, ask your school what you are responsible for as a student and then do what you have to do.... AOPA does have helicopter insurance for students..you have to call and ask them though, its not on their website. Goldy Quote

They do not cover helicopter instruction. They will cover you after you get a rating. I did find a company that would cover me, but the price was a couple three times the deductible. I didn't get any and lucked out. I would check around, but helicopter training doesn't have a good risk factor. Quote
tattooed Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I have also looked into insurance. I have excellent medical coverage thru my husband's employer....do I need more? Or different since it's aviation? And is there any liability for the machine? Like if I screw up big time, can I be liable for damages? Or is that the school's responsibility? I guess I should as them! Got my 1st solo coming up soon....so these things cross my mind! 2nd question....AOPA membership. I am considering joining. Is it worth all the hype? Seems like a good organization with alot of bonuses for members. I have joined Veterinary organizations, and they were not what they said they were, and I never used their features or their webpage. AOPA: While they are generally perceived as a F/W organization, they support General Aviation as a whole and we need to support them as well. There is safety in numbers. Plus their legal insurance is well worth the cost, even if you do not use it. Quote

I'm speaking from experience here, Join it and make sure you have the legal plan. You should do this from day one. Just remember, even though you may be a student, even if flying with an instructor, you can be held liable for certain things. Your going to spend a lot of money and time to get that certificate, and it can be taken away in a blink of an eye. Spend the couple bucks to join and get the legal plan. Quote
Tenacious T Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Life insurance couldn't hurt, I got 100K coverage through AOPA which covers flight related death, most policies don't. I also got their legal coverage plan, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Quote
tattooed Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Alright, alright! I joined! Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh. Think yah'll were gettin' a commission.........................just teasing. But do tell me more about the legal plan. I snooped around the site and didn't find any info. But, it was late and I had just busted out a few sections of my PVT test prep. 100% on the VOR/ADF section!!!!!!! WOOOO HOOOOO!!!! (Sorry, I had struggled with it, now I get it, and I'm excited!) rotor91 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Some schools offer the $400 per year, or some schools can tack on $15/hr. to the rental. I'm pretty you're not responsible if your up with your CFI, but if your solo, then it's all on you. Better to pay the $400 or the per hour rate, but read the contract carefully, as you still might be liable for $ for the deductible. my $1.50 worth!R91 Quote
Downturn Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Hello Everyone, Wondering if I need to get any kind of insurance, outside of my health insurance, while a student working toward my PPL? Your Flight School should have insurance that covers THEM for any losses. They do not necessarily provide coverage for you. Some insurance companies will provide students a $100,000 liability limit, but others provide you with no liability protection. In the event of an accident you could be left paying for a very expensive defense. Also, All insurance companies reserve the right to subrogate against you for any damage you may cause to the helicopter. (even beyond the deductible) I reccommend purchasing a non-owned liability policy if you are looking to be sure you are covered fully. Quote

I found an insurance company that specializes in helicopter student/pilot/CFI liability and deductable.I am a CFI and my annual premium is 375. Students and pilots are around 275.It covers the 10,000 deductable. It covers 25,000 in personal liability.www.insureaviation.com/United States Aircraft Pilots and Mechanics Association, Inc.The underwriters name is Rick Lindsey; you can go on the web site for more info. I am also a member of AOPA, and the legal insurance is a must. Have not had to use it, knock on wood. Quote
