Thoughts on flying conditions, living conditions and pay? Thanks KP If it was my choice, I would take the offer with Liberty Helicopters in NYC. I prefer those types of helicopter operations over the GOM. Don't get me wrong, I would fly in the GOM too, but having the choice, as you do, I would go with Liberty. Best of luck to you in your decision! (I'm still in the early stages of training, but Liberty is on my list when the time comes to send a resume) Quote

(I'm still in the early stages of training, but Liberty is on my list when the time comes to send a resume) When me and my family visited New York we went on a 20 minute tour over New York EC-30's clean very well maintained.4 star service. the pilot was awesome also very knowledgeable. he reminded me of that dump truck operator in DH-3 tunnel seen. lol If I was to fly a bunch of tourist around for a living, this is one awesome spot and a very nice and friendly place to do it for. There fleet looks clean and if i was to go out and do it all over I would of wanted only a longer flight. my .02 cents !~LD~ Quote
palmfish Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I'm sure both jobs pay so well that it's not a consideration but... How much does a home in Louisiana cost compared to a home in New York? Quote
Witch Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 How much does a home in Louisiana cost compared to a home in New York? OUCH !!!! Good point there though. That got me to wondering about rent and other costs. I bet it'd be a bit less in Louisiana. I've been to Louisiana and NYC. Louisiana is a bit greener and warmer and humid. NYC has buildings and asphalt...except Long Island. Also, I-80 east of the GW bridge-as I remember-had potholes at least eight feet deep. All-in-all, whatever decision you make, it'll be the right one. I wanna stay in Oregon. Quack! Later Quote

I spoke with a former pilot with liberty and heliflight, and he told me that liberty has airline arrangements to get you to and from work if needed. You might want to contact liberty for further clairification, as things might have changed since. Quote

That can be difficult. Also, Airlog will be a 1/1 or 2/2 schedule so that would be a consideration. You don't have to live in LA to work at Airlog either, TX would be a slightly better option within driving distance. Cost of living would be vastly cheaper than NY. Then again, quality of life could be a lot better in NY. Quote

Bayou06 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 The GOM or Tourists in NYC,,,,apples and oranges as far as what you will get as far as experience and marketability. GOM: With Air Log you can get to fly a varity of aircraft, B206 B/L 1,3,4s, B407, if you're interested, S76s. You'll learn weather, balancing load and fuel, flying at MGW and landing at a variety of locations, ie. toadstools, production platforms, drilling rigs, crane barges, and salvage boats. You're learn how to manage this yourself being single pilot VFR. Yes, it's working in the boonies, but the accomodations are generally good. At AL you will ge the opportunity to fly A LOT, easy 600 to 800 hours a year. As far as flying tourist in NYC, I've never flown that gig, but I just don't think that it offers variety of experience or hours that the GOM can, just my .02. Quote

Yeh , because at Liberty, you don't have to do any of these things. You simply strap in (optional), and takeoff into the busiest airspace in the world. After all, that isn't very 'marketable'. Also, weather is never an issue in the New York City area with its proximity to the dry ocean. Sometimes I fly without any regard to fuel, because there is no need to do any of those calculations anyway. They only have Astars, BA B1, B2, and EC130's, oh yeh, 355, F1, F2, EC120, Dauphin, and I think even a golf cart or two. The only reason I mention the golf carts is because they have the same amount of technology and were developed when those jet rangers were. If you are lucky, you can even get checked out on the tug with the pimped out muffler and bling wheels. Although not officially called a toadstool, the landing areas in New York are quite spacious. Often requiring a shoehorn and lubricating jelly to get the desired result. After all, real-estate in NYC is so easy to come by. Managing this by yourself in a VFR, MVFR, and oh I think they might even fly at night (single pilot VFR) environment definitely makes you less marketable. Liberty also has the opportunity to fly Charter passengers to various locations in the Northeast. Going to unfamiliar locations with limited notice and flight planning on the fly are definitely things I don't want on my resume. Besides flying celebrities and the occasional billionaire around instead of Boudreaux rednecks definitely isn't for me. At Liberty you will get the opportunity to fly a little, barely getting 800 to 1000 hours a year. Hopefully you don't want any overtime, because there is plenty of that as well. Another thing that might not appeal to you is the scenery that thousands of people are paying to see, while you are being paid to fly around it. I know that flying to the same oil rigs over the gulf must be give breath taking views, and a great sense of accomplishment. Maybe the trade off of overnights on the rig with the fellas and a couple of good skin flicks is worth the tradeoff, but I reluctantly will stay with the city of New York as well as company supplied hotel accommodations. Please stay in the south. Lousyana is great. I hope you sense the sarcasm, as I laid it on pretty thick. If you have any legitimate questions, please email me through my profile. 1 Quote
