Is anyone familiar with these programs? What might some of the pros and cons be?

more money out of your pocket, and into mikes. pass on that one buddy. you will go through training with the GOM company you get hired on with. a guy with "offshore training course from brazos helicopters" isnt really going to impress a HR guy.

I have to agree. To the uninitiated, the course may sound good, but in reality is that it may be somewhat of a waste. The operators are going to want you to go through their training. Even experienced offshore pilots will go through new hire training where their skills are verified and honed. The few hours at the Brazos school will do little to improve your chances of getting hired. I'd advise you to take that money and spend it on more flight time. The more time the better.

It does not make sense to me to pay almost $100,000 for training assuming you don't fly helicopters. I will be going to Bristow Academy which owns Air Logistics...and hopefully do well enough to get a recommendation from Bristow to get a job at Air log once I build my hours up. I would rather get my hours by instructing and get paid...even if its low pay... better than paying the money they want to get you to 500 hours.

Thanks for the responces. That was pretty much my impression of it as well. I don't know how many hours it actually works out to getting, but it seems awfully expensive. I was wondering if there was something I was missing though. I was looking for really in depth instrument training when I ran across that, figured it couldnt hurt to get a few opinions.

The research continues ...

waist of money. . avoid Brazos helicopters at all costs. Mike is a real character. I went there "shopping" around when i was looking at schools here in Texas, he treated me as a "tire kicker".. needless to say, i went somewere else and payed cash for my training. . .

I agree with the other posters. No need to pay to fly when you can get paid to fly and no need to go through a "generic" GOM training program when the company that hires you will put you through their tailored made program.

It sounds like a good deal when you first read it but ultimately it's just a way to add additional revenues to the bottom line which has the reciprocal effect on your wallet.

Future206, Bristow is nothing like SSH. You can get more training for about $15,000 less and you don't pay it all up front...its a pay as you go program. I have talked to pilots that have either gone there or know pilots that have and they all have said its a very good school. Bristow also owns Air Logistics so if you do well in school you have a very good shot at getting hired to fly in the GOM. Bristow does not promise you a job as an instructor like SSH but will help you find a job when you graduate. Bristow usually has 4-5 openings a month for instructors so if you have more graduates than instructor jobs they will choose the best to fill those jobs. For me I felt Bristow is the best choice but everyone is different in what they want in choosing a flight school. I would suggest taking a tour of Bristow or any other school you are interested in before you decide. Have you considered the military or coast gaurd ?

That was the only reason why I gave Bristow a second look ;)

I have looked into the CG but decided that I didn't like the fact that in the military or CG I wouldn't have a 100% chance of becoming a helo pilot... I might reconsider after I get my PPL, hopefully a better chance... :D
