Anybody have any experience with training at Chesapeake Bay Helicopters?

Thanks,

RR

Yes, I have. I am currently going through them to do my re-entry into helicopter flying after about 15 years away. Owner Wilson is very experienced & very easy to work with. Earl, the chief pilot seemd very knowledgeable and experienced. I have only flown with Wilson so far a I just started before the holidays and will pick up in a week.

I'm going to get my add-on instrument and then build hours for my add-on ATP.

I like the Schweizer 300 CBI & C, very stable platform. One thing I really like is that there is NO SFAR to worry about hours. They will rent after checkout too.

Hope this gives alittle info from my limited exposure so far.

Give wilson a call or e-mail from his web site. He is busy so he may take a day to get back to you.

Good Luck,

edspilot,

Thank you for the review on CBH. I like the 300's too. Did my PPL-H in a 300C and my CPL-H in a 300CB. Neat little aircraft! Keep me informed on your progress and how you like the place, please.

Thanks,

RR

Hi RR,

I am very familiar with Chesapeake Bay Helicopters, I did my flight training there and also worked there for awhile. It was a good school when I was there, I believe most all the instructors I trained with are gone now. I have heard rumor that they have expanded thier commercial operations so much that they can't keep up with the student load. The biggest bonus is that Wilson Gilliam is a DPE, I think for all ratings. If you have specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

I agree the 300 is an amazing ship... I did a small part of my private with them, and enjoyed every min of it. They will work you hard but when all is said and done and they turn you loose you will be the best darn pilot you can be. I will tell you this... I reciently sent them a resume because I would work for them on there commercial ops in a heart beat. They also have a beautiful 333 that they use for powerline patrol, and a 300C in Pennsylvania for pipeline inspection. I would give them an A+ for their trainingm and would work for them at the drop of a hat.

CBH is where I take lessons. My schedule is slow, probably more spaced apart then I want and that most would do to get their PPL. I can tell you that everyone has been extremely nice, kind and sensitive to my inability to follow a regular schedule like most students (I work a ton ...hard to leave work to show up, so I try t do mostly weekends--when I dont work). The previous comments are on target, Wilson is a very busy and nice. Earl is super.. the instructors I have flown with are kind, knowledgeable and extremely patient. I like it at CBH and would love to finish my PPL there very soon. Robert is a very good instructor and a workahollic...thats why I like him, his work ethic is similar to what I think mine is at work, and I find that a good quality. Of all the things that I like and admire about pilots, the one thing I find myself truly liking is that there is a good chance that if/when one becomes a pilot..as a workaholic...you can thrive on a pilots schedule.

rodrop,

Thanks for your review. I work all the time myself, so I know what you mean. I have two teenage boys and a precious wife that I am the sole income source for. I'm getting there though! Keep at it.

Also, there is another helicopter school at that airport. I believe it's Hampton Roads Charter Service. When I was stationed in Chesapeake a couple years ago I looked at both schools, but ended up flying with Hampton Roads Charter. I only flew a couple times but was very impressed with the instructor and the owner.
