supergokougt Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 First off this is my first post and i have to say: THANKYOU FOR ALL OF THE RESOURCES FOUND IN THIS THREAD!!!!! It quickly became the forum i spend my time on (newyorksurf.com being the one i am starting to miss) Second. I live in Brooklyn - work in nanuet, ny which is in rockland county. so i would like to train in the tri state area/Long Island. So i am doing a fair amount of commuting and it puts me in the middle of a few places. The one i was giving serious thought to is http://www.wingsair.net/. Ever heard of it? Any other suggestions? Also very glad i didnt go for Stewart airport SSH. Also i have lost a little trust for anyone trying to sell anything. So how swamped is the market in this area with CFI's? Would i be able to instruct once i went down this path? or is there even a market for training other than this teacher who dreams of flying instead of kids not caring? what are the low level hour type jobs around the area? where is a good place to research current jobs in the area? so i lied. its not a million, but i still have more and like or not they will be coming and probably be much crazier. hope to hear back. K-38 Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 [q So how swamped is the market in this area with CFI's? Would i be able to instruct once i went down this path? What are the low level hour type jobs around the area? where is a good place to research current jobs in the area?hope to hear back.First off welcome to V.R. Second I tell anyone considering pursuing a career as a helo pilot that they will have to be able to relocate 1st for the C.F.I. position, than 1 1/2 years later for their first turbine job(tours or the gulf), then probably once more in another three years for whatever specialty they end up pursuing. It would be rare for you to have a civilian career path where you can stay in your home town. If everything works out so you can stay local through all of that wonderful, but I would not plan on it. supergokougt Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 I figured i would have to relocate that is also another reason why i wanted to pursue this career. But if there is not a large need in one of the largest cities in the world is there need any place else? Any good websites to look at to find some CFI jobs? How can i find where the need is? Also how about gaining hours outside of the states? Would those hours be legit and also would it be easier to find careers in other countries. Quote
cl600pilot Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I figured i would have to relocate that is also another reason why i wanted to pursue this career. But if there is not a large need in one of the largest cities in the world is there need any place else? This is coming from the fixed wing perspective but I think it's probably the same in the RW market... it's not that there isn't a large need in large metro areas, it's just that since it is one of the largest cities in the world, there are ALOT of people available to take the jobs. If you're willing to go to a more rural area that has a smaller 'need' than NY but has a drastically smaller pool of applicants then your job search will probably be easier. But weather it's New York, New York or Big Piney, Wyoming -- the most important aspect of any job search is networking and it's never too early to start that! Quote

supergokougt Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 that makes sense that it is flooded with applicants - also i will remember that advice as i search and meet other pilots! again thanks for the useful replies. as i begin to talk to posssible instructors i saw in the student pilot guide that you should create a list to interview the instructors. being new to this i am not sure what i should be asking. i have some ideas of what i want to ask, but does anyone have more suggestions on key questions i should be asking? should i ask about instructing once i am done or is that pushing too much without having any training? also i have a BS in tech ed and a masters in vocational eduction so that gives me k-college certification to teach in NY. Would this help me at all for getting a job and is there anyone out there who instructs with a realtionship with a college. I was maybe hoping i could build a program with a local school or again would a school even have interest in this? i know i am getting a little ahead of myself but i like to go in with many plans to reach my goals. so i want to be able to have some knowledge on the after training. slick1537 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Asking them about how many students they hire on is not out of the ordinary. That is pretty much the standard in the industry. I am attending Northeast Helicopters in Ellington, CT. I think they may cost slightly more than other schools, but their facility and Aircraft are perfectly maintained and their instructors are top notch. Also they recently became a Schweitzer operator so you can train in the r22 or the 300. Just another school to consider. Quote

Ask how many hours did his/her last couple of students take to complete the private pilot certification course. Ask if any of the students your instructor has trained have been hired by the school. Ask how many hours he/she has and if close to 1000 ask if he/she will be leaving at that point. Most importantly is that you and your instructor get along. That will help make your training more enjoyable. I wouldn't bother asking about your chance of instructing at the school when you are done at this point. They do not know you well enough yet, they have not seen your flying ability attitude, professionalism, etc etc. Good luck. Quote

500E Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Check how they want you to PAY!!!! & read the small print, & if you don't understand ASK someone not connected, you will get used to asking questions in training Do not pay for bulk hours!! if you do pay only what you can afford to loose if the school goes TU.Get a feel for the school do you feel comfortable with the people? talk to them it will give you a lot of information as to their approach to training Talk to other students if possible, ask about scheduling and down time on helios.ASk if you will have continuity of CFI this I found when training was a real + point, Him & I got on real well and there was mutual trust which allows faster progress, not having to recap with a new FI saves time= cash. And it will cost more than you thinkDon't think I now any one who spent lessI know I appear a grumpy old person, but have been, seen, done it, & made the mistakes, lived to regret a few as well. PS. still getting things wrong as well, who said you get wiser as you get older Quote

It would be nice if they had more than one CFI you'd pick to fly with.I'd ask what else a CFI did besides flight instruction and ask about scheduling issues.I'd want to SEE the maintenance facility, altho I'm not sure it would make any sense to an ab initio. I love what I do. I love it as much now, in my 40th year of doing it, as I did at first. Getting into that situation is expensive, and not just 'moolah'. The competition, even in a favorable market, is BRUTAL, and that means some people fail. There are no guarantees, save one- if you don't try, you won't do it; and there is an undeniable element of luck in every pilot's life. Luck may be '99% preparation and 1% opportunity' but...I've had 'real' jobs, non-flying positions, made more money than I do now and was happy in all of them. I'm happiest flying helicopters. I know far, far fewer pilots who regret their profession than professionals in any other field... Quote

I would recommend that you go to West 30th St. and talk to the tour pilots at Liberty helicopters. I think they can answer all of your questions. Marc D. Quote
