angrach
Listening to JFK tower is entertaining, but it's all large commercial airplane stuff. Which liveatc.net feeds have a good amount of helicopter activity? Which feeds would you suggest for someone trying to get familiar with the radio? KBJC where I used to fly in Colorado is good for helicopter ops, Rotors of the Rockies operate out of there and are busy every day. We use Bravo taxiway for departure and landing and Delta taxiway for pattern training. In addition there's several news helicopters that operate out of there. JDHelicopterPilot
Don't know if there is an online feed to listen to but Las Vegas has extensive helicopter ops all day long. Cheers Rotorrodent Yeah but those radio calls are so short and to the point. Example: Departure "Tower Maverick 24 Trop, Bravo" "Maverick 24 departure at your own risk" "Maverick 24" Boom, we are gone and off to departure control. Example: Approach "Tower Maverick 24 Calville 3,000" "Maverick 24 landing at own risk wind 110 at 24" "Maverick 24" That's it. Doesn't get much easier than that. We do talk to approach and departure but it's the same. About a 2 second radio call. Sometimes less is more. When there are 25 helicopters coming in at the same time you'll see what I mean. mikeconti
I'd like to find a website that would allow control of frequency changes. Live ATC.net is great but it does get a bit annoying when you're trying to follow a flight.
rotormandan
Another website to check out is Flightradio.com pretty much the same with some different airports.
Goldy
Unfortunately in Los Angeles, several of the airports like LAX and VNY have separate frequencies just for helo's....so monitoring the airport doesnt necessarily give you any helo traffic, because the scanner isnt tuned to those channels. Burbank (BRB) does have a fair amount of helo traffic on it...mostly transitions.
troops23
Toronto Buttonville (CYKZ) has a good amount of helo traffic, when the feed is up anyway. There's a Canadian Helicopters flight school there, 3 media helicopters, as well as transient helo and medievac helo traffic. The occasional military helo as well. But a lot of fixed wing traffic. Buttonville is one of the busiest airports in Canada due to all the training activity. Toronto Airways is one of the largest flight schools in the Toronto area, and Seneca College has a very busy aviation degree program. Plus there is all the private a/c owners as well. If you want to develope a good ear for radio work, this is an ideal airport to listen to. I've come back into the control zone to land at 0845 local, and there are 6 fixed wing in the circut already, plus an r22 parallelling the fixed wing traffic at the same time, PLUS transient traffic. It turns into quite the circus. Edited August 7, 2008 by troops23
