PhotoFlyer Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) A recent thread has brought out the grammar nazi in me... "Effect vs Affect" These two words are probably the most commonly misused words in written english. (Maybe not, but 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot) Affect with an a means "to influence," as in, "The arrows affected Ardvark," or "The rain affected Amy's hairdo." Affect can also mean, roughly, "to act in a way that you don't feel," as in, "She affected an air of superiority." Effect with an e has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, but to me the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo." PLEASE STOP ABUSING THESE WORDS! --PF See this link for a longer, better formatted, explanation. Edited August 28, 2008 by PhotoFlyer Quote

Kelly N. Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 I do beleive the affect your are experiencing is do to the effect of the improper use of the words!!! Uh-oh! Now you've done it: "beleive" and "do to" Since we've seen the grammar Nazis already, I can only assume the spelling Communists and synonym Terrorists are en route. Quote

Gomer Pylot Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) The spelling Nazis have arrived. The thread title is misspelled. Grammar has no 'e'. Oops. I see it's Communist, not Nazi. Oh well, one of those political parties... Edited August 28, 2008 by Gomer Pylot Quote
PhotoFlyer Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) I did say grammar nazi, not spelling communist. I have never claimed that I could spell, only that grammar is another pet peeve. (Although, mine is far from perfect at times. ) (I fixed my poor speeling for you Gomer) Edited August 28, 2008 by PhotoFlyer Quote
AngelFire_91 Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 "I" before "E" except after "C" or when sounding like "A" as in Neighbor and way, or in other "weird" words. I also get gumpy when people mess up to, too, and two, as well as They're, There, and Their. Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Gumpy??? It seems that they're, there, their is becoming one of the most common errors. It's getting to be a rarity when anyone gets it right. It also annoys me when people use apostrophes to make plurals. Apostrophes are used to indicate possession, in most cases. Quote
heligirl03 Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Ooh, don't get me going. I try to restrain myself in the forum or I'd never get anything else done. Quote
Jeff Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 I do beleive the affect your are experiencing is do to the effect of the improper use of the words!!! Oops! There's another one. Your vs. you're. Here are some more: do, due by, buy, bye to, two, too How about mayonaise? Mayonaise allota grammar errors on this site! Quote
FauxZ Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Thru vs. Through.. as in one is correct and the other is gibberish!!! Of course, this is a fairly universal topic on the internet. Some people have even made lists. (Potentially NSFW) http://www.cracked.com/article_15664_9-wor...-you-think.html PS: NSFW = Not Safe For Work. Language mostly. Quote
67november Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) Oops! There's another one. Your vs. you're that's not a misuse of the words, it's a typo of an "r" on you. but those two words are often misused, along with "are & our" Edited August 28, 2008 by 67november Quote
AngelFire_91 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Gumpy??? Damn, I tried so hard not to spell anything wrong on that post and one stupid typo throws it all to $#!^. And yes, I'm aware of the improper use of a capital letter. Quote

And yes, I'm aware of the improper use of a capital letter. To further add insult to your injury. Are you aware that the use of 'and' , as you did above, is not allowed to be used at the beginning of a sentence? ;) Sorry, I could not resist, but I'm totally just hackin' on ya. Quote

And yes, I'm aware of the improper use of a capital letter. Wow, a run-on sentence coupled with an incomplete sentence; impressive. Not to mention the use of an expletive is strictly forbidden in formal writing, and on this forum (even "bleeped" out as you have it). I will let it slide this time but next time we will not be so generous so don't ever do it again or I might have to use a sentence that has more bad grammar and runs on much longer than this one does. I'll give a cookie to whomever can point out ALL of the errors in the previous centence. Edited August 29, 2008 by PhotoFlyer Quote

All I'm going to say is:I'm pretty sure that switching from singular to plural and back to singular is not proper either. Ok, I quit, I'm done, stick a fork in me! I'll never write another topic on here again. Now see what you all have done to me! Quote

Scarab Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Hooked on Phonics. There seems to be quite a few folks graduating high school that wouldn't be able to read the above no matter how it was spelled. Too many field trips and teacher workshop days, not to mention all the "holidays". Sad state. Quote
coolhand Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 This is pretty funny, take a look. (I hope it works) Quote
