Fort Rucker

Recommended Posts

I plan to take a trip down to Fort Rucker soon with my girlfriend. I was just wondering if there is anything to do around there, such as watching them fly etc?

I wanna get a feel for the place in person, and maybe talk to some people in the flight school, but I have no clue if this is even possible.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

I was just there in July. I could only visit for a few hours, so I went to the Army Aviation Museum (HIGHLY RECOMMEND), drove around post (saw where they hold WOCS), and visited some of the stagefields (even saw Sbuzzkill flying around!).

Someone else can give you better directions to particular stagefields and the best times to see the helos, but let me tell you, eaw - once you visit, you are going to find it very hard to stick with your decision to finish out college first!!

Best of luck,

Lindsey

I am going to try and leave early one Saturday and stay as long as I can. How was the Army Aviation Museum (great, obviously, but details? How much does it cost?). But that sounds awesome! I am really excited to go down there, as I HIGHLY plan to be there within the next few years!

That sounds good. I'll have to look into it some more before I go, but I can't wait. And I have thought about that. I see blackhawk helos flying in over where I stay and going to the nearby hospital, and that alone makes me want to ship off tomorrow.

Thanks,

Elliot

That's as much as I'm going to post because I don't want to spoil it. B)

You wont see much flying on a Saturday but you can drive by some of the stagefields where the aircraft are based out of and check those out. Check out the museum for sure.

What would be the best day to see flying? And I want to show my girlfriend a blackhawk up close. She hasn't ever seen one except in the air!

Awesome. I will probably head down there on a Friday morning, then. How are they about letting people drive around the base? How close can you get before you have to worry about being arrested?

I really am fascinated with blackhawks. I have been since I was about five years old. Seen quite a few in person, but you're more than right AWhetstone. They are enormous in person. Quite stunning, really.

Not to be a buzz kill here but it seems like the line of questioning about Post security is becoming a little too specific for a public forum. If you are on Post during duty hours and want to see Army aircraft then all you have to do is look up. If Blackhawks are your thing then drive by Lowe, you will be able to see plenty from afar. If you plan on actually driving onto any of the stage fields and getting hands on with an aircraft it won't happen. The best place to get up close and personal with an aircraft is at the Army Aviation Museum on Post. You will not be disappointed.
