Nomad110
Is anyone here flying passengers for the F1 race? I can't tell what I am enjoying more, the races or the amazing amount of helicopter traffic. Everything seems to be very professional. As a student I really enjoyed reading the FAA NOTAM for the race. Tomorrow I know is going to be a controlled chaos. The filming helicopter, a B3, has been doing some of the fanciest flying. I was really surprised how much flying is done outside the height velocity safety curve to get the awesome shots we take for granted on TV.
JCM5
I just want to know how one lands a job in that broadcast helicopter - I am a fanatic F1 fan. Went to Monza earlier this year it was awesome.
brettjeepski
The company next to our hangar here in Fort Worth is flying all six of their bell helicopters for the race. I spoke with one of the pilots flying a 407 and he said it was going to be a crazy mess from normal races he had chartered. I guess not organized like other races he had done. He said there will be over 30 helis involved for this F1 race in Austin. He was showing me his routes coming into the track and specific way points he had to fly over for routing in and out. It was pretty intense looking. They also did specifically only allow turbine aircraft. No R44s allowed...
Spike
I just want to know how one lands a job in that broadcast helicopter I flew a couple NASCAR races as the “Pennzoil copter cam”. Usually, the networks have helicopter contacts that either supply their own ships or simply outsource with an outside 135 operator.

Yeah we took a helicopter to the track in Monza - they had about 20 ships (all A-Stars) just doing shuttle runs from the airport in Milan to the track. Hot loading/unloading passengers and just bouncing back and forth all day. That was on top of the other dozen or so private ships that were flying in - a handful of AW109's. I am pretty sure every stop on the calendar is the same kind of zoo....but they seemed to be well organized despite the commotion.
