Adsfbike Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Has anyone had any luck contacting a current Senator for a LOR? I just messaged John McCain on his website tonight. I kind of have my doubts that I would hear back from him but I was curious if anyone else had success with a current Senator. Also, do Governor's work well for LOR's? I am pretty sure I can get one from my Governor. Again, just curious if they hold enough weight, I do realize that it would probably be better than a teacher/pastor, something like that. Thank you for any advice. Quote
d10 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 If they personally know you they should be strong LORs. If you're getting a generic letter written by some McCain staffer fresh out of college which was probably mailed back to you with a friendly reminder to vote in the next election, it doesn't matter how big of a name is photocopied into the signature block, the board will know it's meaningless. 2 Quote
Adsfbike Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 That is not what I'm trying to do. My thought was to get an interview with him personally. No different than a high ranking WO that I didn't know and went to get an interview with. Most people don't know people high in rank so like myself I would need to ask for an interview with them. Is this thinking out of line? I was just curious if it's been done before since I've heard people saying local government officials can make good LOR's. Quote
d10 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 It is different from a high ranking warrant LOR because there's no conflict of interest for a warrant. A CW5 can and will refuse to write a letter if you don't impress him and it will have no impact on his career. With an elected official you're always going to be fighting an uphill battle in showing that the LOR wasn't written simply to secure your vote. If it's not clearly apparent that the letter is based off of a personal relationship with you the board member will roll their eyes and toss the letter aside. If you're lucky they may have time to scan over one of your real LORs before moving on to the next applicant. Quote
Adsfbike Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 That makes sense, I appreciate your thoughts about this. Quote
apacheguy Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'd say go for it. If you did manage to obtain such a LOR, it would at the very least show that you had some gumption and weren't afraid to ask for what you wanted. 2 Quote
Yamer Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 McCain mailed me a "thanks but nice try nerd" letter back in response to my bugging his office. And I am AZ Guard... Good luck. Better to get from someone who knows you than their rank, per se. 1 Quote
