r22butters Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Certainly is a different point of view,...about 38 seconds in. 1 Quote
avbug Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 A guy holding a "selfie stick." Wow. It just doesn't get any more adventuresome than that. 1 Quote
r22butters Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Yeah I know, its not that exciting, but when he sticks it out the window all I could think of was all the warnings I've heard about making sure nothing flies out the left side,... Quote
RagMan Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Is that suppose to be an instructional flight or just a rental pleasure flight with instructor? I can't tell if the guy has the stick strapped around his wrist or not. I've had plenty of photographers stick their cameras out of the door while flying, my only two rules were, (1) make sure it's strapped around the neck, and (2) only do it during slow speed flight. If you take the necessary precautions to mitigate the risk, it's not a problem. Quote
Hand_Grenade_Pilot Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) It's unfortunate that the pilot in the video doesn't really seem to care about the GoPro being stuck outside. May very well bite him in the ass one day. While doing doors off tours, it drove me bat sh*t crazy when I'd see passengers being escorted towards the helicopter with selfie sticks. I'd take the stick off, give it to the line guy and use string to create a wrist strap for the GoPro. Created a substantial delay and the customers were usually less than thrilled. It was important to me though, because I knew the selfie stick was for the sole purpose of sticking the camera outside for a 'cool shot'. So what's the big deal? Possible impact damage to the tail rotor. On the other side, in something like an R44, could cause damage to the horizontal stabilizer. Even saw one guy in another aircraft almost stick it up into the main rotor. Unlikely that it would cause a catastrophic failure, but will certainly put your employer out of a heap of cash while the aircraft is grounded, and components are repaired/replaced. And possibly you out of a job. Aerial filming can be done safely, with camera equipment facing out the side. But there's a big difference between a professional w/ secured equipment, and some dumbass tourist and a flimsy selfie stick. Edited July 9, 2016 by Hand_Grenade_Pilot Quote
r22butters Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 I guess the real question is, how securely mounted is the camera to the stick? Selfie sticks,...how vain can you get! Quote
