Heli_Girl Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Wow, i would love to fly the little Kiowa heli, thats my fav military Helicopter, either that or the Little Bird Lucky girls.. Quote
PhotoFlyer Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 It's too bad that there is still a sexist attitude towards woman in the military. The military has sold itself short because of that attitude. Hopefully, the military will improve as time goes on...hopefully. Quote
Gerhardt Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 The only line that stands out is "9 percent of women in the Army are aviators", which seems kinda high to me. Still, that is one awesome story! Quote
Heli_Girl Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Yea, i have thought about joining the Military, Seems like the only way that i might get to fly since money is such an issue with Civil training But im afraid i wont make it past basic training since im so small and not very strong, plus the mental aspect of the whole thing. I think it would be awesome, i just dont think id be able to do it. Quote

You have to make up your mind that you can do it and be good at it. BE POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

HH60Pilot Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 It appears that the link from MSNBC is no longer valid. If the line quoted is correct about 9% of the females in the Army are pilots, then that is a pretty high percent when compared to the percentage of men in the Army that are pilots versus those that are not. I would like to see the video to be able to reply to photoflyer's comment. However, what I can say that in the 23 years that I was in the service, I saw the military take great strides in the area of attitude towards women, to include opening up many combat specialities to women. To say that there is still some sexist attitudes in the military would be correct, because the military won't be able to get rid of them 100% until our society as a whole does. Remember that our military is made up of people that unless they were military dependants, were civilians prior to joining the military. Our military sometimes does a pretty good job of mirroring the values of our society as a whole. While not perfect, at least the military pays women the same as it pays men to do the exact same job. Too bad that corporate America can't say the same. Just my two cents...Doug Quote
Bladed Sun Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 In reference to Heli_Girl: I found myself in the same boat as you a few years ago. Fortunately, I found an FBO to work and fly with. Two years down the road, I have my commercial ticket and a loan I had no hope of paying off with my job. I joined the Army a little over two years ago and haven't looked back since. My loan is almost payed off and once my shoulder surgery heals I'm making up my Green to Gold packet. The Green to Gold program, in a nutshell, allows active duty soldiers to attend college full time and then OCS and at the end become a commissioned officer. Then I'm putting in for flight school. I am female and haven't encountered any sexism. The Army has an active Equal Opportunity program, which soldiers are given regular classes. I won't lie though, not every aspect of military service is great; nothing ever will be. It is, however, what you make of it. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. p.s- Go for Little Birds, Kiowa's are overweight and underpowered. Quote
