Someone parked in the fire lane and got towed by a copter! Just kidding, but its not everyday you see a Bell 407 with a car slung underneath it! In the last picture, the pilot had released the cable and let the car attempt a "autorotation" to the ground. The copter was owned by one of the main sponsers wanting some publicity.....

Very cool, thanks for posting the pics. brushfire. I can't imagine how loud that Hiller was  Jet engines for rotor tips, now that would be something to see.

I thought super huey's had two engines and four blades? Just wondering....

Excellent pictures, though! Thanks for sharing these!

hey brushfire or anyone else who attended, did you hear something about a coast guard demonstration turn into the real thing while you were at the airshow. The link below is the article about a plane crashing some two miles away from the airshow. A coast guard helicopter was giving a mock rescue demonstration until it turned into the real thing. (not trying to jack a thread or anything like that, just wondering if one of you guys heard about it and were actually watching that demonstration until the chopper took off.)

Yes, the C.G. was about to do their mock demo, when they got the actual call of a plane ditching in the ocean. They weren't in the middle of a demo, but they took off, did what they were suppose to do, and came back like nothing happened. There were 2 C.G. Dauphins there.

There were a lot of people at this show.......even saw Frank Robinson walking around! A long drive from L.A., but had a good time! It was nice to see Brushfire and Goldy! I have a lot of pix too, a lot of what Brushfire posted, but maybe I'll post a few!

Cheers-

Rob

Bell 412 has four blades and two engines. I believe the "Super Huey" is an ex-mil huey that has been modified with the Bell 212 rotor and trans. possibly and upgraded engine also. Most of these are public use or restricted aircraft.

Found these with a quick search

Edit:

The last site above has all the details for convertion, They use 212 parts to convert both the Huey and Cobra for lifting and fire fighting.

Dukechin, I believe the engine is similiar/same as the Cobra's from what I have heard, and the rest is from the 212. Not sure where the donar transmission came from. If anyone has a hankering to know I could find out if needed, CDF Copter 104 is based just north of me and in the same ranger unit where I work, and one of the Captains that flys on it is an old acquantance.

Rotor91, get some of those pics posted, would love to see what you got.

Rob & Roger- Great seeing both of you there..anytime you're in the valley give me a call, we'll go buzz around in the great Class B&C spaces of Los Angeles !!

My fav part of the show was the ram jet powered Hiller- what a sound! I could not describe it to anyone not there, but I bet I could hear one coming from 20 miles away ! This was definitely not designed as a stealth aircraft !

Posted

Along with the "slealth" noise mode that come with ram jets, what about the fuel usage rate LOL, something like 100-120 gallons per hour (I think that is what the announcer said......) don't think it would make it as a inexpensive training aircraft hahaha!!

I think you are right, it was about a 30 gallon tank ( built in the pilot seat) and that was good for about 20 minutes...OK, so how many hours (TBO) on a ram jet engine anyway ?? Remember no engine, no transmission to worry about, and you'll stay strong hand cranking the rotor !!! I couldnt believe that part...wasnt there a reference to the G load on the rotor..wasnt it like 100 G's ?? I couldnt believe that

Posted

I don't remember what the announcer had said about the G loading, and for some reason I thought it was a 50-55 gallon tank, not a 30 gallon tank, I think I better go get my ears checked...... oh my.

I think I was in to much aww watching the contraption hovering and hoping the aircraft was going to stay together and in one piece with the M/R speeding around at a million RPM's. Speaking of that, the T/R was basically invisible, at least to my eyes. Most T/R's you can see a background difference behind the blades, but that one was way FAST!

Gunner,

For some reason this model had a tail rotor, mounted slightly to the rear of the midway point on the tail boom. Here is a pic of it, and you can see the tailrotor in motion as my camera caught it. After the pilot had set the little copter down and it was coasting to a stop, the T/R became visible again when it was slowing down. Several people around me made comments that they didn't evan know it had one until it was almost stopped. I thought they were tailrotor-less as well, but this one had one for some reason. Hope you can make out the Red tipped with some yellow T/R in the picture....

One of the Hiller museum guys told me the tail rotor's only function was to turn the aircraft, since there is no other way to turn or yaw in a hover...and its so small in diameter, it takes very little power away from the main shaft.

Goldy,

I just now put 1 and 1 together, your profile picture and your comment about the R-22 finally made sense....... I feel so blonde right now. LOL

It was a Cessna 177, Went down 1 mile offshore.

I recovered it on 6/21/06. used a diver to rig the A/C, it was sitting in at approx. 14' deep.

Weighed about 4200lbs. with water, 2600lbs. without. Pulled it out with a S58T.

I think there was a 58 at the airshow, or one that looked similiar to it. Thanks for sharing Utilitarian, got any pics of the recovery?

About 10 years ago I dove on a car and boat that slid backwards at a local boat ramp. The driver was slightly intoxicated and forgot to put the car in gear when he got out to prep the boat for launching. The car slid into the water and the boat had floated the trailer and rear portion of the car. Someone not quite as drunk swam out and cut it free, the car and trailer slipped down and out into the lake. Not quite as exciting as your story, but I think it would have been funnier if we had used a copter! It was a simple recovery, but a costly one at that for the poor sap....

Moral of the story is, awwww shoot don't care any more LOL.

Thanks for posting the pics rotor91, I loved seeing those old Hillers with all the refurbed interiors. Looked like brand new units off the show room kinda. The last pic was a nice addition.......
