nicepants Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I just called to ask about an intro flight at a local helicopter school. They do a 1 hour intro lesson, 30 minutes ground, 30 minutes in the air, for $170. Just wondering if that sounds about right, seems a bit higher than other places. (I've seen some that are about $180 for a full hour flight, etc) Quote
pasbonsimon Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 its all relative I guess. We have a low intro lesson rate to get students in the door. $80= tour of facility and how ever long it takes to answer your questions and ground instruction to include SFAR73 and TSA endorsements and 20 minute flight where you take the controls http://www.vortex-helicopters.com/ Quote
Hovergirl Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I took 2 intro flights, both were 20-30 minutes on the controls and as much time as I needed to get my questions answered, and both were under 100$. Does this school have high helicopter rental rates as well? If you are thinking of flying there that might be something to consider. Quote
Goldy Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 $100 bucks in Los Angeles..or you can come check out the school, answer questions, and jump in the sim for 20 minutes ....for free. Just call ahead and make an appointment. Quote

(I've seen some that are about $180 for a full hour flight, etc) I've seen free to $200. All included unlimited time to BS and pick the instructors' brains, and most included at least a little ground school. The high end was a Schweizer school, and all were worth it. I wouldn't base too much on the cost of the intro flight, but I never walked in and took a flight. Sit down first and get a feel for the school, get your questions answered, and then, if you think the school's a likely candidate, ask for the flight. Quote
Gerhardt Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Seems just a tad on the high side but really not too unreasonable. There are a lot of skid-kickers out there that want to hang around and BS with the CFI all day about their pilot career ambitions, half of them trying to bum a free flight. Charging $170 for 1/2 hour intro flight and 1/2 hour pre-flight/post-flight talks will help separate the cream. Quote

nicepants Posted June 29, 2007 Author Posted June 29, 2007 I went ahead & signed up for it. Scheduled for Saturday at 1pm....although I live in KC and we've been having rain the past few days. Forecast for Saturday was partly cloudy earlier this week, now they're saying possible rain. Hopefully that clears off by mid-day. Quote
