I talked to an oil worker friend I went to high school with recently, and he told me he made 110k last year with a 7/7 off the southern california coast. He's only 21. Not sure if its true, but thats what he said. Do the so cal rigs have a need for helicopters? He told me they usually take boats.

There are a few helicopters out there, but not very many. There used to be more. I flew a little out there once, under duress. Interesting week, flying instrument approaches to minimums both offshore and onshore, one after another. When the fog sets in, it's serious fog.

I've heard the oil rig chefs get more than pilots...

Term you are looking for is a "bull cook" and that was one of the numerous troll posts made here.

The individual posting the "story" wasn't necessarily trolling as much as the story 'twas cut n pasted being the troll.

To answer your question, the average base salary for new GOM pilots is 51K, and then an increase of +/- 3% annually.
