Solo'd on 7/03

Recommended Posts

Finally got to the solo point yesterday after all kinds of delays (including the birth of my first child!), did my solo flights in a 99 R44 Astro. Good looking ship.

James Wiltz at North Carolina Rotor and Wing is a top notch guy, I haven't come up with a question he could not answer or maneuver he could not demonstrate.

Congrats!

James is a great guy - I did my first lessons with him before moving back to New York a few years ago. Cool to see that he's now the chief pilot down there! NC Rotor and Wing sure has grown a lot since I was there!

Thanks folks, very busy year indeed.

Helicopter aviation has been the most fun I've had in a long time without a doubt - I highly recommend taking that demo flight for those of you that are reading this thread and on the edge of doing so. My first flight in a helicopter _was_ my demo flight!

It's been expensive training in the R44, but still cheaper than other schools in the region offering non-Robinson training in aircraft suitable for my weight and height. I do still want to get out and try an Enstrom, though they seem to be renting for 20-30%+ more than the R44 I'm in (while it is an Astro, it's still seriously low time and really nice), in North Carolina, and thats to much for me (I expected something between a R22/300 and a 44 honestly when I started looking).

If anyone has a line on some dual time in an Enstrom within a reasonable cost range near Charlotte, NC I would love to get a couple hours in on one just to check it out.

I look forward to wrapping all this up and moving on to my commercial rating, and a R44 of my own to go with it (maybe something else.. but it sure is looking like a 44 to me!).

Marlon,

Pony up for some time in the R44 Raven they have over there - I know its a good bit more, but from what I can tell its worth it :). I have been to their Franklin County location a few times, I'll probably run into you there one day.

Congrats man. I am finally starting tomorrow afternoon, flying 17Z, it's the newest of the R-22s. See you around.

I will when I have some more time under my belt. I started a blog on here today after my first flight and I'll update it whenever I fly. The first lesson today made a lot of the theory click. One area that Flight Simulator helped with was manipulation of the controls without a death grip and making small corrections, I was quite comfortable flying with my thumb and two fingers.

Which location do you fly out of?
