franknyc Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Is RW that much more expensive than FW? Let's assume 200TT for RW and 250TT for FW: Are my calculations accurrate? RW:Total of 100-hours solo in an R-22 @ $210/hr = $21,00025 hours dual in an r-22 @ 250/hr= $6,25040 hours in a Schewizer 300 for instrument @ 300/hr $12,00035 hours dual in r-22 for commercial/CFI @ 280/hr $9,800 Total: $49,050 Fixed-wing 125 hours solo in a C-172 at $120/hr $15,00025hrs dual in C-172 @ $170/hr $4,25040hrs instrument @ $170/hr $6,80035hrs dual for commercial/CFI at $170/hr $5,95025hours multi-engine at $300/hr $7,500 total: $39,500 Above assumes another $5,000 for misc. gear/books/fees, of course Quote
copterkeith06 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 It will probably cost you more than that for 200 RW hours. RW is more money than FW for sure. But, there is alot more excitement in flying a helicopter than there is in a airplane. Have you flown these aircraft ? Keith Quote

Keith I've been going back-and-forth between RW and FW; don't have much time in either though. For FW I was training on a Piper Warrior, but my school's sole Piper was retired and it was replaced by the cessna, which I haven't flown yet. Edited March 12, 2009 by franknyc Quote
Rogue Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Are you thinking of a career? If so if you start adding up multi engine costs then at the end it really isn't that much cheaper to go fixed wing though the potential to make more is there. Quote

Personally, I think you need to visit a flight school and get an accurate cost analysis. I think your prices are inconsistent and your times are unrealistic. Quote

Personally, I think you need to visit a flight school and get an accurate cost analysis. I think your prices are inconsistent and your times are unrealistic. I think palmfish hit on a number of things I was also thinking. To add an item I think the instrument rating would be less because you can do 20 hours without the instructor on board. I would also recommend using a simulator as you can do so much more with them that you can't experience in the aircraft i.e. failed instruments, radios, or engine problems. It is all very good practice and is less expensive than an aircraft. I think a simulator is under used because everyone wants the PIC time which is valuable. Even if you don't do a lot of sim training I strongly recommend at least a few hours in the sim. Quote
jaredsega Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 remember U half to have 300Hrs fixed wing to get comm CFI.Rotor is 150hrs.and when U start flying Complex for comm, Cost is way more.I work in both FW & RW both are a freekin awesome. JARED Quote
Darkhorse Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Besides the hour issues brought up with FW already, I only pay $89 an hour for a 172 and $114 dual. That may be lower than the average hourly rate I dont know, but is a big difference from your calculation in the long haul. Quote
ADRidge Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Maybe it's the lack of sleep catching up with me, but why are you gonna fly 100 hours solo? Quote
IFLY Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Fixed wing commercial only requires 250 hours and only 50 of those have to be in an airplane. The only time requirement I found for CFI is the 15 hours as PIC in cat & class. That is probably for glider CFI's since you can get a private and commercial glider with less than 5 hours flight time if your a 200+ hour fixwinger. 61.183 (j) Log at least 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class of aircraft that is appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought; and Jerry Quote
