droz88 Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) Hey guys just a few more questions as I am drawing nearer to enlisting in the guard and pursuing a WOFT slot. Would anyone be able to comment on the difference between being a Commissioned vs Warrant Pilot while in the guard? From what I have read, warrants fly a lot more than commissioned on active duty. But is that the same case when it comes to the guard? Do commissioned officers still do the 2 weekends/month requirement and spend most of the time flying just like the warrant or are they required to do administrative stuff? skyreaper Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Proactive research does a body good. I heard the guard doesn't have many helicopters anymore. Quote
Justine Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Op, message me your question if you would like guidance Quote
2ndGen Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 The choice between commissioned and warrant in relation to flying helicopters is an easy one. (warrant:) Quote
Justine Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 It varies from state to state what state are you considering. Quote
WaterRooster Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Army's best kept secret is the Warrant Officer Corp. Though if you ask a 2LT they will tell you how much better all the power they wield is ;-) haha Quote
droz88 Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) I am looking at Colorado and Washington. Colorado doesn't have a WOSM right now and I have no idea when they will get a new one. My question is if being in the NG as a CO Aviator is a lot different that being in the NG as a WO Aviator. I know that on the Active Duty side the CO's generally fly less but is that the same when it comes to the guard? Do CO Aviators still just come in and fly the minimums just like the WO Aviators do or are they required to do a lot of non aviation related things? Edited January 29, 2014 by droz88 Quote
Joe_P148 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 FYI Warrants are commissioned officers as well. Did you do any research on this yourself? If you are purely basing your career call on flight hours then warrant is the career path for you. Quote

If you are purely basing your career call on flight hours then warrant is the career path for youIf you are joining to be a WO just for flight time you might want to reconsider. Like with anything you do, you will do your job better if you aren't in it just for yourself. What appeals to me about the Officer side is the overall planning and leadership. Yes, I want to fly, but I want more to execute a mission and win. WO have different, more specific roles, ie IP, MTP, Safety, etc. They do have HUGE responsibilities. I'm not back to my unit yet but I have had multiple Officers tell me that we fly a lot. Everyone has to maintain minimums which you are doing throughout the month, not just on drill weekend. Depending on the structure of aviation in your state you could be pushed out of aviation after captain due to lack of upper leadership positions Make sure you call around. If you cant get in touch with an Aviation strength manager ask for the Officer strength manager. I do believe its common practice that every state has some form of WOCS in their RTI or they outsource it to a nearby state. GL Quote
droz88 Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) Thanks I will see if the have a OSM that could help. I will have to do research...if there is a way to go in as an officer-aviator to a guard unit that might be the way to do it for me instead of enlisting and trying to get a warrant slot. No, I am not basing this off of flight time only. I want to serve alongside others in the military but don't want to be going to endless meeting and powerpoints if that's what officers do. However, if officers in the guard actually fly about as much as warrants then that would be worth it to me. Anyone ever hear of someone going street to seat in the guard as an officer? I am, went to OCS first, then boarded. Thats the way it most likely will be. I was a 09S aka no prior experience, college option Quote
