I second that, which airport/aircraft?

How about a school in Northern Nevada already, there are people here who want to fly!

AMEN Rotor rookie... i was looking for something in the Reno/Tahoe area, and there is nothing... so that's why i made a post about moving to either long beach ca, or portland/hillsboro for training. I guess i should take my intro flight before i make these drastic decisions, but i'm pretty sure this is what i want to be doing!

It might be a great idea to go do it and fly a little before comitting. You could drive to Bristow-HAI in Concord and do some flights with them, stay the night or drive back home if your in the Tahoe area. It will make it a long day, but it might be worth it. The time will still be counted kinda, depending on which route you take (61 or 141).

There is a place in south shore... i called him once, he wanted to train me.. but i don't know... ONE helicopter and ONE guy, seemed a litte sketchy, just because he's only one guy... what if he forgets to teach me some important life-saving lesson etc. I have experience with aircraft, worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, would love to fly jets... but goin civilian helicopters sound more attractive.. i'm pretty sure i'll be into it. Office with a view, no one (bosses) looking over your shoulder etc, make decent money, what more can one ask for... any helo pilots get travel benefits that you know of???

Hey Alpine Wonder...

Seriously, you need to take a flight and see if flying is for you. Making any further plans seems a little presumptuous at this point don't you think?

If you are still in Tahoe, go up with Helitahoe for a half hour, eliminate the driving and accomodation costs.

After this flight you will know for sure, no doubts. Next step? Get an FAA medical and make sure there are no unexpected health hiccups (finding out you are colorblind after paying for 50 hours of flight time is a really bad deal).

Other Tahoe options?

Try Gunner aviation in Rancho Murietta, they are two hours away. They train in the Bell 47.

HAI is in the East Bay (Concord) three hours away, personally that commute almost killed me and didn't work out to well. I am in Tahoe and can answer questions if you'd like to PM me.

Cheers

hi all,

would anyone be interested in a flight school in sacramento (other than ssh)? an honest, friendly school is in the works.

Do you have any more information? The area could use one, as only Bristow (Concord), and American helicopters (Fresno) are close right now. I know SSH was in Sac, but I think most avoided them and drove to Concord or Fresno.

What have you heard? Are you trying to fund a flight school?

I never knew about Gunner Aviation until recently due to the SSH disaster. I guess they do not advertise or have a web site. They might be another option.

Gunner Aviation, www.gunneraviation.net is a great school!! ( just outside of Sacramento 15 minutes). The weather is great there and the DA is much better than Tahoe. I was at High Sierra Heli until they went bust ,leaving about 6 of us hanging. One of the former HS students told me about Gunner, and that they train in B-47s. I wasnt too sure about that until I stopped in and talked to Sean the CFI and Chester the owner and CFI. One flight in the B-47 and I was hooked. They have an awesome ground school and the B-47 flies great and auto's are a snap. Great ship if you plan on flying 206's . The are in the process of expanding and adding heli's very soon.

I know the Silver State thing is a mess, but these guys are the real deal. You should call them at 916-354-1950.

Thanks for finding the web site for them... I couldn't find it on Google, Ask, or Yahoo.

Sure thing, I know these guys havent done alot of advertising in the past ,but they are in the process of updating their website. I think they have been around for quite a few years. I have no connection to them at all except that I'm a student who got my private there about 3 months ago. I'm just sorry for all of the Silver State people out there. Just trying to let folks in the Sacramento area know there are still some honest schools out there.

If anyone wants more info contact me at markj10821@yahoo.com

Is that the same guy that use to have two yellow 47's out of Rancho Murietta? I think it was called Rancho Rotors...

Might have to go up there for some fun B47 time! Love flying those things!

I saw his post last night about trying to help the SSH students out on flights when available. I'll go up there and buy a few hours. Thanks for the info!

I will also suggest Gunner Aviation in Rancho Murieta, CA. I was screwed over at High Sierra in Placerville, and found them in order to continue my flying. I just passed my Commercial written with a 94 and am a few weeks from my commercial checkride. I have over 60 hours in an R22, 40 in a Schweizer and more than both in a Bell47. The Bell47 is easy to fly, once you R22 guys get used to the throttle management (sorry but no govenor), and from what I hear it flies very similar to the Jetrangers. If you are in Sacramento and want to continue flying, stop by, say hi, talk to Sean or Chester and see if it feels right for you. Oh, I almost forgot that you can pay as you go instead of paying all at once. Seems kind of important.

Good luck and keep flying if you can,

JimT

so, why is everyone scrambling to start a flight school in Sacramento? Don't get me wrong, its my hometown, but with 3 or 4 very reputable schools still near by(3-4 hour drive max, 6 from Tahoe) wht not take a drive down to fresno & Tulare and look around professional scholls with great reputations, pay as you go, 141 with CFI and CFII programs....its all there and in place.

P.S. its a small world, so all of the Nor-Cal flight schools talk to each other... keep that in mind.

GOOD LUCK! HOPE TO SEE SOME SACTO GUYS MAKE IT DOWN TO THE CENTRAL VALLEY

Just curious about what you are referring to? So if someone starts a school in Sac, then what? I am not interested starting in a flight school...been there, done that. But, competition in any industry is a good thing. Yes there are some fantastic schools south and west...and your point?

You've got to be kidding- "and the point"

True, competition can be good but competition usually means the goods are similar. Most new schools are run by new cfi's with a dream and they fail miserably just after they go through a giant learning curve loose all their money and then go find a job at an established company.

Sorry, but not everyone is cutout for business and most are not cutout for the helicopter business and i hope that when people consider a school they look at who's running it (the CEO and the chief pilot)it takes a person that does both very well or two people that get along and understand how it works.

Not to be negative but I've seen this scenario repeat itself many times over my career and now with SSH down all but a small hand full have made it and none that i know of without strong helicopter and business backgrounds. Look at the posts on this forum and see how badly you can get hurt by a faulty setup or even a good one that is out for the money.

-just commenting on boatfixerguy sounding like competition is always good for the students. no offense meant if transmitted.

I dont see anywhere in the post where someone suggests starting a school in Sac.The point was merely that there is a great school in Rancho Murieta, Gunner Aviation. Its 15 minutes outside of Sacramento with great weather, professional cfi's, more than willing and able to help some of the SSH folks or anyone else looking to learn to fly. I wouldnt want to commute 3-4 hours when there is such a school as close as Gunner. The problem with most schools is that they are all top heavy. These guys teach, fly ,and work on the 47's. They completely into their situation.

Good luck to all of you

SPECIALIZED---> Hitting the nail on the head...which reminds me, there are two Specialized Heli schools located in the bay. Also, a reputable established and proven school with good maint. facility!

MY POINT---EXACTLY THAT, a school starting up as new without 141 approval and proven training program will possibly be a waste of time and money, possibly meaning that if the school is started as a branch of an already good school nearby, its chances of it carrying you to where you want to be is much better! Thanks for the help "Specialized"

Never thought I'd feel lucky to be a victim of High Sierra Helicopters.

My heart goes out to everyone who has been ripped off by this SSH cr@p. I'm sure all the money is safe, locked away in the Caymans no doubt.

It's going to be interesting to see who fills the void in Sacramento, obviously the market is there.
