I don't think anybody offshore listens to music when flying. At least not with passengers. It

would really look bad. The reg's concerning electronic devices apply only to aircraft

operating under an instrument plan, as far as I know. Flying around with an ipod and

headphones under your headset would probably be a good way to get fired.

When I worked at Air Log I had lots of friends that would listen to music while they were flying. Much of the time out there is solo. It does get a little boring. Personally, I want to hear the aircraft when I'm flying, so I never did. Be safe!

Yeah, I guess it's not like it's dangerous. Between the FM and flight following, there's a lot

of radio chatter. If I missed one radio call because of music, that would be one too many.

It just doesn't exactly scream "professionalism" if you have the tunes going. Long flight

solo, with the volume down low, I guess isn't a big deal. I think the chief pilot would

strongly disagree, though!

My helicopter has XM radio built in through the Garmin 396 it works great, if things get to busy just turn it off. You can also build an adapter that you can plug inline so you can use your ipod. We also have a tv built in with tuner

It's not that hard to rig up an input into a headset. The Clarity Aloft and others have it built-in. You just plug in a cable between the music source and the input, and there is nothing to see on the headset. It's not uncommon to listen to music or other radio via ADF, if there is one installed. I used to listen to a portable FM radio when flying through a jack I put into an extension cable. Mp3 hadn't been invented back then.

A lot of people in the Gulf listen to music... I know I did... 100nm crew change flights in a little ship get old without something to listen to. :)

Missing a call is bad...we always installed an aux jack into the intercomm system which would mute the music on the ipod whenever anyone talked, be it a passenger, other pilot, or atc. I know that if you're flying for someone else, you might not have a jack in the bird for this.
