adam32 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 What do yo guys pay for workmans comp for your CFI's? Do you guys drug test the CFI's and the students? Thanks Quote
jehh Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 We don't drug test students (I would think customers would take a dim view of being drug tested), however the CFIs are on a random drug testing program. We do not provide Workmans Comp, it is too expensive. Quote
adam32 Posted February 10, 2008 Author Posted February 10, 2008 Theres no law for workmans comp? I'm not sure about the students view on drug testing, its going to happen to them sooner or later. So if they have any bad habits, I would rather be the first one to find out, since I'd be teaching them how to fly. Quote
bossman Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Drug testing is mandatory if you do rides. All mechanics and pilots. In WV workmans comp is also mandatory. It's not too bad, 3.6% per $100.00 of payroll. Actually, its about the least expensive insurance you can carry.bossman Quote

Generally, there is a minimum number of employees you must have before you are required to carry it. Quote

In Texas, it is about three times that price... And no, in Texas it is not mandatory... Our health insurance is FAR less expensive than workcomp, we have a very good Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan, I could afford to just pay 100% of everyone's health insurance for less than half the cost of what workcomp costs... adam32 Posted February 10, 2008 Author Posted February 10, 2008 Thanks guys. I'm in California, so our laws are pretty insane on everything and I bet work comp in no exception. I tried to find it online with no luck. I'll check with a local operator next week. Quote

I think my CFIs would rather have the money than the coverage. Quote
Privateer Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 One thing I've noticed in the industry is how some schools have instructors working as independant contractors. I'm sure this changes the workers comp and other insurance issues. Quote

I'm sure this changes the workers comp and other insurance issues. If they work as independant contractors they will get a 1099 form at the end of the year. This means they are responsible for all the state, federal, and local taxes, as well as paying the company and employee share of SSI. If you are not prepared for this, it can bite you hard. If at all possible I would reccomend being on the payroll. Plus you are eligible for time and a half all over 40 hours per week. Quote
