superstallion6113
That Hontek stuff is crap IMHO. At the factory we would have to reapply the Hontek coating to UH-60M blades, with 5-10 flight hours on them. If the aircraft flew in the rain at all, the coating would come off in rather large chunks, dime sized to quarter sized in the next few flight hours. I believe the Army AMAM for the S-70M we built said there was a reduction in hover performance with the coating as well, compared to a plain nickel/titanium leading edge. I hated the stuff. 500E
Interesting comment 6113 Hontek it is suposed to be the DB of finishes for leading edges, so much so when we tried to get samples we were told the US wont release to civy users.Have flown with the EVS tapes in moderate to heavy rain & they are still there. Can see why the 300mm length but would prefer longer sections
superstallion6113
I honestly don't get why they do that. It's just a thick, kinda rubberized coating that just sprays on. It would literally be coming off in very large chunks down the entire span of the blade after one flight in the rain for more than an hour. It got to the point that we would not flight test any of the M model S-70/H-60 helos we had if it was raining, which is alot of down time when operating in the finger lakes region of NY during the spring/early summer. Apparently it is excellent at preventing erosion in a desert environment, which is why we used it on the UAE and Saudi MOI contract S-70M aircraft, so it'll probably work great for them over there. But for an all weather aircraft, expect the extra maintenance in repairing/recoating the Hontek.
500E
6113Thanks for further info.We dont have to worry as it apears only US Mill have product.Have Emails from KM stating this also NOT field repairable?WTF,Hontek states it is, KM states it is not. Now with your sugestion rain is a killer will wipe it out of the likley erosion list.

Now with your sugestion rain is a killer will wipe it out of the likley erosion list. We always removed the blades and sprayed/repaired the coating in the paint booth. In a stretch we painted a few that were ready for customer delivery out on the flight line, so I don't see why it wouldn't be field repairable. Certainly nothing special, just a paint gun and air source and typical prep tools were required to do the repair. We got our coating kits straight from Hontek.
