That's not a very good Christmas spirit.

Having the statistics and not sharing them.

You can make some up, just make them sound interesting.

I have heard that up to 87% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Nonono....its been statistically proven that the 87% story is falsely manufactured information. Its more accurate to put it near 88.8%.

Except it's true...An aircraft has nowhere to go but down, and we haven't left one up there yet! :P

I used that line during Christmas tours! A customer asked me what happens if the engine quits....I told her we land it as it has to come down...we haven't left one up there unmanned yet. :o

So if aircraft engines are so much more advanced over automotive engines then why do they seem to fail a lot more?

Adam,

When I said "Statistics" I was referring to the bold statement.

No need to get all defensive. I just thought you could throw us a figure.

My 2 cents is you always hear about an aircraft having an engine failure but rarely about a car having an engine failure because when a cars engine failure occurs it's not a big deal. A vehicle recovery occurs and it's over. When a Aircraft has an engine failure it's big news, lots of hands and eyes on that kind of event.

Here are some "statistics" from AOPA for you to look at with special consideration at the engine failure portion of the document.

Cars - failure to the point engine quit and coasted to side of road

3 total - 1 Honda, 1 Ford Explorer, 1 Subaru

Aircraft - 14,000+TT (11,000+fixed wing, 2,000+Heli, 500+Glider)

3 failures all in Rotorcraft (only recip engines, never a turbine)

It was interesting the disproportionate amount of time in heli's versus failure. I also take issue with the "falling from the sky" wording since even though I have a significant amount of time in gliders I'd still rather lose a one and only engine in a heli. 3 failures, 3 full autorotations, 0 damage.
