Rotorman Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Hi folks Is there someone out who has made any experiences with a lefitie as a helo pilot.I meen because of the less sensitiveness of the right hand.If you know one or ever train some person, please let me know your opinion. Thanks a lot and cheersTom Quote
flingwing206 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 It makes no difference at all. I'm left-handed, as are lots of others. In very informal surveys, it seems that there are a higher percentage of lefties in helicopter flying than in the general population. Quote
Rotorman Posted April 10, 2006 Author Posted April 10, 2006 flingwing206 Thanks for your reply. That was really what i wanted to hear .This was my biggest worry. Thanks Quote
joker Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Just to second what Fling said, I don't think you'll have any problems whatsoever! The motor skills required to fly a helicopter are so new, that your hands will pick them up with no discrimination. Infact there have been times when I wished I was a 'leftie' when I've had to write down a clearance or ATIS with my left, and fly the aircraft with my right! Good luck. Joker Quote
500E Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 ME to thought it would be a pain but did not notice it at all after the first flightPerhaps thats why the 300\500 PIC flies from the left seat. Left on cyclic Right on P2s collective Hmmm must try that some time ! Quote

It's a real pain when you have to write anything down while flying being right handed. Chopper Jon Quote
HelliBoy Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I'm a leftie too. In flight writing is easy but if you have to gaurd the collective on the ground you've got to reach across yourself with your right hand, gaurd the cyclic w/ your knees, and write with your left. It looks pretty stupid and isnt much fun. Reminds me of a mug my leftie uncle had, it said 'Hire the Left Handed, its Fun to Watch them Write.' Quote
67november Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 yeh but we're in our "right " frame on mind Quote
scottsl4 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I am a Leftie. Learning to fly was not as hard as learning medical procedures that are designed primarily by Right handed people. I learned to do stitches and IVs upside down and backwards. Quote
EAGLE1 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Lefty as well. Does not seem to make a difference. Quote
67november Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I learned to do stitches and IVs upside down and backwards. are you sure you wouldn't want to be a mechanic instead Quote
Tara Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I'm also a leftie anybody else??I'm just getting started with the whole process (not a pilot) and I'm a leftie! I thought that was an interesting question, something I never would have thought of. Quote
jsmith13 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Lefty here as well. Just getting started as well. Quote
ascott20 Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Yup, Leftie here too. Never had a real problem. Kind of liked the idea of having the stuff that keeps me up in the air (well basically... throttle and collective I'm sure I'll catch heck from somebody for that comment:)) in my "dominant hand." Kind of liked the idea of having the stuff that keeps me up in the air (well basically... throttle and collective I'm sure I'll catch heck from somebody for that comment:)) in my "dominant hand." This actually makes me wonder if there is something about left-handed people being more of a majority here? How about ambidexterous? Any advantages to that? While I claim I'm a leftie, the only things I can think of that I do with my left hand are write, eat and throw darts. Quote
67november Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 being a leftie in a right handed world make us ambidextrious by nature left handed, write, eat, throw darts, ball, frisbee, etc... right handed, archery, shotgun, rifle, golf, etc.... Quote
HelliBoy Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 U truly are a freak of nature 67N, left handed, right eyed. Ever fly a weapons system with an eye reticule? Can u switch which side they're on? Quote

Can u switch which side they're on? i shoot with both eyes open, don't have a dominate eye per say, never tried a reticle system would be interesting to say the least Quote
Tara Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 i shoot with both eyes open, don't have a dominate eye per say, never tried a reticle system would be interesting to say the least That is too funny. I never thought about which eye I use. Suppose it doesn't matter all that much when shooting beer bottles. Are you a left-handed scorpio to boot or did you narrowly escape that one? Ambidexterous by nature, for sure! Quote
67november Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 no I'm a left handed Gemini, my evil twin is always trying to get me in trouble Quote
