Crusty Old Dude Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I currently live in So.Cal. & found a place I would like to train but I may end up moving near Sacramento and the only nearby school I have found is Silver State!Check out Specialized Helicopters in Hayward. Not that close but from what I've seen and heard of Chris Gularte, seems like a solid school (bay area). Quote
BOATFIXERGUY Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Gunner Aviation is in Rancho Murieta and run a couple of Bell 47's. Everything else that I know of is a couple hours away. What kind of bird do you want to fly in? Quote
adam32 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I currently live in So.Cal. & found a place I would like to train but I may end up moving near Sacramento and the only nearby school I have found is Silver State! Silver State shutdown. Bristow Academy in Concord is good. I've also heard good things about Specialized. As far as I know, Gunner Aviation used to be Rancho Rotors and they crashed a couple 47's... JDHelicopterPilot Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I thought there were more schools up in Sacramento. Anyway, I would look at Bristow up in Concord. Give them a call. You can talk to Chuck. Great guy and I learned a lot from him while I was there. Many ways, I wish I had gone there in the begining of my training. Quote
NorCalHeliKid Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Silver State is a great school, plus they promise a job when you're done!!! I would look into Bristow in Concord as well, but from personal experience, they will tell you that if you are going to be full time that you need to go to the FL location. Do not go to FL and get lost in the numbers...its a friggin circus over there. Personally, I think that flying in the SF Bay Area is a delicious treat!!! Specialized in Hayward (the ghetto) is also a good school with a reputation. If you want to get your PVT and CPL and IR later than you could go to the Auburn airport, Sierra Vista flight school has an R-22 and an ex-ssh CFI that is a cool dude, per phone coversation a few months ago. Good Luck. Quote
flyhyeguy Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Captain Phil If you will be moving up to the Sacramento area, might I suggest youtake a look at HeliTahoe located at South Lake Tahoe airport. Theinstructor there, Claudio Belloto, is also the FAA Safety Counselorthere as well, having myriad hours of both fixed-wing and rotary time. Claudio was my instructor in Fresno before he developed the programin South Lake Tahoe. I drive up to train with him and just recentlyspent a week there, hoping to return to spend two more weeks training. Why is HeliTahoe any different from any other flight school? First, youget one on one training, not based on a fixed curriculum but on yourunderstanding and ability to grasp the information necessary for safeflight. Claudio doesn't just rely on the textbook but his vast experienceto make you an excellent pilot. I have met many of his private studentswho are flying at a commercial level. They also have had the benefitof mountain flying which I have not and is part of the reason I will bereturning there in May. I spent many hours with a variety of instructors before and afterClaudio and after all those hours I still return to HeliTahoe to have himexplain it in a why that assimilates the information into my system. Healso doesn't allow me to slack, constructively always encouraging meto improve my technique and also has me teach him, which is a greatway for me to learn. They say experience is the best teacher and I would challenge you tocheck it out and experience him first hand. I bet you'll love the location, the training, your fellow students, and the experience as a whole. In this life, many people and flight schools make promises, many of which they do not or are unable to keep. Check out anything I tell you or others tell you. It has to fit for you and leave you a safe and competent pilot. Quote

And, its all 44 time which is just expensive if you are flying through 5 ratings at a fast rate. Clever way to ride the line between free marketing and friendly advice. Quote
