adwr070621 Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 So two separate flight schools I asked have quoted turbine time for 825$/hr. Is it worth the money to pay for this? Or perhaps maybe just continue to log hours in a R22 for example and hope to be picked up one day? How does one go about getting turbine time without a job in a turbine helicopter? Quote

How far into your training are you? The traditional route is to instruct at 200-300 hours and apply for turbine jobs at 1200 TT. Employers at that level will train you (and many will say they will train you they want you to fly). A small amount of turbine time is unlikely to help you much coming in at 1200 TT. You will also find guys here who bought time in a turbine for much less than $825/hr and found it helpful. There's also a school that offers a turbine transition and claims to put you on as a line pilot after completing it--to give you an idea of how much experience is meaningful, I think that program is more than $15,000 (in addition to your other ratings). But for most of us, the bigger challenge is getting to 300 hours in a Robbie so we can instruct in the very likely case that we don't get hired by our school or can't find somebody to hire us at 200 TT. 15 hours of turbine time probably won't help you get a job as an instructor, whereas 100 hours of R22 time could get you a job. r22butters Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Beware of those "train with us, and we'll give you a job" places! I tried one once, at the end they said I had the job, but then when it came time to start, the job suddenly disappeared? They said they had nothing else for me to do, so I was SOL. About four months later they had another add up promising a job after training. The turbine hours I gained, although fun, have not led to even an interview. Quote
bossman Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 $360.00 per hour for the machine, and $40.00 per hour for the instructor. FH1100 with C20B. This price is for training, we get $800.00 per hour for commercial work. Insurance requires you get 10 hours with instructor before we can turn you loose on your own. Quote
Chopper Tom Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I would not pay to get a few hours of turbine time. You need to get several hundred hrs to be in a good spot. I would build Robinson time and try to get to 1200TT. R-44 time looks good, its simular to a 206. Work your way up the ladder. Start with the R-22 then the R-44 and so on. As far as paying $800.00 per hour, definately not worth it. You can go to CA and fly 206 for $190.00 per hour. I know of some other places that are $400.00. I never paid for my turbine time, the employer trained me. If they claim you will have a job when you are done, make them sign a contract. Quote
rollthbns Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I have to agree with the general consensus that turbine time is not the most important time you can have on your resume as a low time pilot. Employers will pay for the transition. However, a little cant hurt at all. Bossman has a smokin deal going. In southern california you can fly traffic watch in a 206 for 170 an hour or so. I have a few students who did it, and they eventually worked there way into a lot more than just straight and level, so it was worth the investment to them. Good luck! Quote

Inferno Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 That whole program is on hold for at least the next couple months. Don't even bother Philippe about it. He feels bad about not being able to do it and turning people down. Quote

He feels bad about not being able to do it and turning people down. The program is not on hold although it is booked for a while. He's just not scheduling any flights until his contract is renewed. He did not seemed to be bothered at the least about inquiring about his time building. Your post would not be good for business !!! Quote
Inferno Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that he didn't want to have business. Last he told me, he wasn't certain of anything though. So you are going to pay to work then, pretty much the same as offering to ferry for free & pay for the flight !!Personally I would think BM offer is at least training flight rather than fly out hang about fly back Quote
AngelFire_91 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Depending on where you're at in your training. I would suggest not paying for turbine time, specially not $825/hr, unless it's something super cool and big, that price is crazy high. Bossman has an amazing deal going there if you truely want to pay for it, but as others have said here, Most employers will train you in their turbine. I have never paid for turbine time and in fact all the time I have in turbine I have gotten paid for instead of having to pay them, even then, if I wanted to take my schools 206 out, I can get it for $380/hr "staff" rate. So I'd say, don't pay for it unless you REALLY just want to and have the spare cash just burning a hole in your pocket. Quote
