without a good steady view of the gauges I'll reserve judgement other than saying I would never kick it around until after I established a solid steady hover after approach, this is really bad judgement that would really bite him at high DA due to poor habits forming

Doesn't look "that" bad to me...pretty hard to tell much with a cockpit video.

Smooth, slow and boring, and you can do everything done in that video in just a few seconds more. Big, dramatic moves at or around hover height will eventually come to a bad end, period.
