Sister service commissioned applicants, January board only?

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

AD USAF commissioned type (non-flyer) interested in flying helicopters for the Army as a sister-service AD applicant.

Met with a WO recruiting team on my base. One of the emphasis notes was commissioned officers can only go up for the board once a year in January.

Started on my packet and found USAREC's website does say commissioned O's only can compete in the January boards. But it specifically listed Army commissioned officers, nothing about non-Army. I contacted the POC I met at the recruiting session again he sounds convinced that even as sister-service I can only go up to the January Board. Is this true?

Just looking for a second opinion, as I cannot find any other documentation aside from USAREC's site.

Thank you.

I don't know this as fact but I would be shocked if they let you apply as an AD applicant in any other board. You should be in the same boat as all other Comissioned Officers.

How about a little background on your AF career, (Commissioning source, AFSC and duty locations). Is it very competitive in obtaining an AF SUPT slot being a non rated officer since the AF is in a need for pilots right now?

Personally, I would rather fly in ANY service than be a non aviator, good choice. But be careful on what you wish for. When it comes to the military, the Army is the real deal. You WILL earn your paycheck the Army way. Good Luck.

I am a 14nerd. Not sure about the current competitive nature of getting a SUPT slot, but working with flyers right now, previous shortages advertised were really billed at fulfilling rated non-flying billets (staff work). Plenty of actual flying positions filled, but I'm not clear on this go-around. Regardless, I do not have an interest to fly for the AF.

Thanks for providing the reality perspective. I do understand I'll be taking a pay cut with no save-pay, QoL will change and I'll have to adapt with a new type of culture and its associated queep. Getting the real deal would be a welcome change from sitting at a desk building slides as my specialization.

I was told the same thing by a recruiter, however, I'm not sure that is true. I'm in a similiar situation as you gentlemen (Marine O) looking to fly in the Army.

My reasoning is as follows:

The USAREC page says that Army Officer Applicants will only be boarded in January. Additionally, they do not apply through the civilian WOFT civilian program (correct me if I'm wrong), which unlike sister service commissioned applicants. So it's already a different application process... with that being said I have been told that the boards that review special cases such as ours, only see these packets on occasion ever few boards. I'll keep digging but I'm about 99% certain the recruiter is mistaken. I'd like to see the source document besides the message on the USAREC webpage.

Post or PM me if you find more info
