Heliman007 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Has anyone heard any news on Bristow or PHI lately? Hiring minimums? Pilot needs? I know there's plenty of other threads about this but can't find anything within the past few months. I submitted a resume to both - through pilots I know there, but haven't heard much back. 1300 hours and ATP doesn't seem to cut it... Also, thinking about stopping into a base - trying to meet some more pilots. Seems kind of awkward though - are the guys there usually pretty nice and willing to chat or do they think I'm just trolling for a job? Thanks for any advice out there. Quote
kodoz Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 PHI was at HAI looking at resumes. They were looking for 1500 hrs and a 1st class medical. Didn't ask them what they're hiring needs were since I'm still a ways off from that. Quote
ChopperJ Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Bristow hired 25 pilots last year, first time in 3 three years they had new hires. They are not looking right now but I'm pretty sure later in the year they are going to have to hire some more pilots. Check the Bristow career web site and when you see Gulf Pilots advertised submit on line and follow up with a call. Also they like to see 1500 PIC, but not always. Quote

What type of hours are those 1300? Ex military? CFI? Turbine? Quote

Thanks for any advice out there. My recollection is that the base is where the rubber meets the road, it's not the driver's seat. Not really a social setting. If you've done follow-ups and it's not productive, that's most likely not changing with a visit to a field base. Quote
Heliman007 Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 What type of hours are those 1300? Ex military? CFI? Turbine? Unfortunately, just CFI hours. No significant amount of turbine to speak of. Anything else that I might be missing? Maybe just getting more hours... Thanks again. Quote
helonorth Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 1300 hours is too low at PHI. At least right now. Even if all your time were single engine turbine, I don't think it would make much difference. You could go to a base, but there really won't be anyone there that would have much influence on getting you a foot in the door. Someone would probably be more than happy to talk to you, though. Nobody cares if you are trolling for a job. Why else would you be there? I would keep building hours and concentrate on the tour operators for now. It's even getting a little late for them. Most new hire piston pilots have at least 1800 hours at PHI. The ATP will help when you have the hours. Good luck. Quote

I would stick with that gut reaction. I DO NOT work in the GOM, but just going from life experience I think it could actually backfire on you. First question....Can you just show up to a PHI base and just start walking around and talking to people? If the pilots arent flying, they are probably not just sitting out in the parking lot. If you showed up to the main office you might get a tour or what? A tour probably given by someone who has a ton of other work they need to be doing, but are now getting backed up because their boss told them to show you around. If you knew people there, and maybe arraigned a tour or something through them and those people were willing to take responsibility/escort you around, you would probably be OK with their invitation. But just showing up hoping to meet some pilot thinking youll get some insider trading information may be a stretch. Is it local for you or would you actually be traveling extensively to do this meet and greet? Trolling for a job? Ehhhh, they would know why you are there and Im sure they would understand. But they probably wouldn't care enough to take a stranger under their wing who hit them up in the parking lot. People do that fairly often where I work. They set up a tour through some dept administrator because they have an interest in LE aviation and I end up spending an hour listening to some guy tell me about his resume and after about 1:15min, I end up almost needing to be rude because they wont get the hint that its long past time for them to leave. Sure.... I get it, but I also have things I need to be doing and talking to me isn't going to have any effect on getting you a job. Then again... a PHI pilot could come on in the next post and tell you that is exactly what you need to do. But I would say unless you already have a contact who knows you are coming..... dont just show up. Edited March 27, 2013 by Flying Pig Quote
helonorth Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Yes, you can just show up at any PHI base and someone probably will talk to you. If you're not flying, it's pretty boring, so most pilots wouldn't mind shooting the bull with you. No need to lurk in the parking lot, come on in the front door (we fly lots of passengers here). Ask the area manager or lead pilot if there would somebody you could talk to. You will not get a tour, let alone get past the receptionist in Lafayette, though. You get the tour of the head shed when you are interviewing. Showing up at a base won't backfire on you because no one at the base level has anything to do with the hiring. Often there are a lot of pilots waiting for a flight and most PHI pilots are pretty friendly and would spend time with you and answer your questions. There are bases within an hours drive of New Orleans. 1 Quote
Flying Pig Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Thats good to know. A little different than showing up to a government operation With all the airline type restrictions at airports I wasnt sure if the bases are tightly secured. Quote
mrjibbs Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 At 1300 hours, you are prime for Temsco or other tour op's that will take a 1000 robby guy and get them their transition. Its not to late but damn near (for this season). Temsco continues to hire even after the season starts because some people wash out. Last season they hired 25 off the bat, and then a few more in June when others couldnt hack it. The key in your situation is networking and persistence. The weak willed or shy introvert (not saying that you are) will not make it. Quote

Come visit! I'm at Intercoastal City, near Abbeville, LA. We working class dudes have ZERO input on hiring, but we'll be happy to answer as many of your questions as we can. It's been a good life for me for ten years, a good living, good company, and I'll be happy to show off my Baby. Just promise you'll laugh at my jokes... 1 Quote
