lee122485 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 So im trying to figure out what level of security clearance is needed for flight school. I’m coming over from the Air Force and I already have a secret clearance. I was told to fill out an SF86 from the recruiter to be inserted into the Army’s “system”. This guidance came down from a CW4 from HRC..? (one of the head guys in the recruiting/training section) Anyways, I was just told on the phone I no longer have a clearance and I need to get interviewed. This obviously took me by surprise because I’ve been told numerous times to not have an investigation started since it will void out my current one. Has anyone else had this issue? It is a little nerve racking since I leave for WOCS in 2 months and now I don’t have one and I was specifically told to make sure I have a current one when going over. And no it is not an interview to “re-up” my existing one. Quote
skyreaper Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Can't speculate on your specific situation, but you must posses at least a secret clearance by the time you start wocs. I'm not sure why they couldn't reinterview and renew your previous one bc sponsorship will be transfered to the Army. Seems like a confusing situation especially if your supposed to still have a clearance. Only SUGGESTION is to call the office of personal management. Opm does all the investigation work, maybe they could get you leveled out. Quote
skyreaper Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Idk for sure but u might have to fill out a new sf86 either way, hopefully another branch transfer will chime in. Whatever u do, do it now. Quote
lee122485 Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 I appreciate the response! I am looking into this and should have an answer my Monday. I'll post the results in case this situation occurs with someone else. Quote
Creep0321 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 please do, I have a feeling I will be in the same situation if I get selected. Even though I just renewed my Secret. Quote
Talon64 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I have a secret clearance aswell. They tried to start me a new clearance too. But I showed them my paperwork where it specifically states not to start a new investigation. But sometimes mostly street recruiters are just ignorant and you have to take control of your own case as much as possible. I have been told you could lose your wocs slot until your clearance issue has been resolved. Hopefully you don't get pushed to another class. Good luck. Quote
lee122485 Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 I showed them that specific statement too, but after many phone calls to and from an individual that I'm sure is a POC on your paperwork as well, he said to have me fill it out to so I can be input into their system. Apparently that's the only way I can be input into their system. So Talon, you mean to tell me that you didn't fill out that sf86 form? Yes my recruiters were very ignorant. However, they did get this guidance from someone who is suppose to know what's going on. Quote

OPM (Office of Personnel Management) is just the organization that conducts the investigation. There are other organizations that do investigations for DoDCAF. The DoDCAF (DoD Central Adjudication Facility) are the people who actually make determinations on your clearance eligibility. Secret clearance investigations are good for 10 years. It does not matter what branch of service you are in either, as DoDCAF makes determinations for the entire DoD. So, find out the date of your closed investigation and then add 10 years, that is when your clearance is expired. If not you'll have to initiate another clearance and fill out another SF86, and typically it should take less than 30 days to complete a secret investigation. Maybe even shorter since you've held a previous clearance and assuming nothing has changed with in the adjudicative guidelines. If your recruiters are not sure, or there is confusion, ask them to talk to their Intelligence section up their chain of command. If they do not, they're being lazy and need to get confirmation - not just be a robot and read what they see off of a piece of paper. They can look up this information in less than 5 minutes on a system called JPAS. All they need is your SSN or previous EDIPI and birthdate. If you are still associated with an active unit, you can even have your intelligence section look it up real quick to make sure you're correct. ...also keep a copy of your SF86 Unfortunately I am very familiar with this process because I had a job that required another investigation. Which made me learn way more than I ever wanted to know about this subject. 1 Quote
lee122485 Posted July 13, 2014 Author Posted July 13, 2014 I'm not due for a reoccurring investigation for another 3 years for my current clearance. I am familiar with the timeframe for a secret clearance and the JPAS. I just think someone lied to me or didn't know what was going on and still irrefutably lied to me. Interview tomorrowJust annoyed Quote
Talon64 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 How was your interview? I did re do my 86 as well but they didnt open me up for a new investigation. I had to geta letter showing my current clearance and exp date etc. Let us know Quote
Diesel5187 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 How do I know if and when I passed my clearance? Quote
lee122485 Posted July 15, 2014 Author Posted July 15, 2014 Everything went fine. He said it wouldn't take long and I should be easy, but it's the issue that i was told I didn't need to do one and then out of nowhere I find out I do, two months before I'm suppose to be there.Oh well! Quote
Yamer Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I went in as an apache crew chief. Secret clearance was granted per my AIT school.... When I get home and do my packet, no clearance at all... So weird. There's a breakdown in the link somewhere. Unless you possess the letter that says you have it, you don't... My thoughts on it Quote
BobLikesGuns Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I had to get a memo from the unit security manager that stated I have a clearance. The security manager might be Brigade level or higher or I belive in the Air Force it is Wing level or higher. They can look up your clearance and type up the info on when it was done and when it expires. All a recruiter knows is you need clearance so that equal SF86. If you do one you might be going through a new investigation or they might see you in the system. The good news is you can get a temporary clearance pretty fast until they finish the investigative process. Quote
TrashHauler Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 This is an older thread so I'm wondering if this information is still current. I have a secret clearance for the Air Force that is not due to expire for another 4 1/2 years. I have read in a few places both "yes it is good" and "no the Army will need another one" and so on, with my former recruiter siding with the latter statement. Hotdogs answered this question with a good amount of detail, but that information is two years old. Have any of the other recent prior service members had to get an updated clearance? One less pile of paperwork and one less step to accomplish is worth its weight in paperwork...and steps. Thanks Quote
Creep0321 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I came over from the Marine Corps, had a secret and did NOT need to get another one. However I had just renewed mine and had about 9.5 years left. I don't believe you need anot her one, however it wouldn't supreme me since you have less than the 6 yr ADSO. Either way, they had me submit a SF86(I keep a handwritten one' so it's easy, just have to update an address here n there), they just never started a new clearance. Quote
apache123 Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Looking for some advice/insight from anyone here that has gone street to seat. Anybody been stuck in holdover status at Rucker waiting for their clearance to be approved? Already missed one class due to not having the clearance approved yet. We are now on the verge of the next 7 week class starting, and they are not giving him ANY insight whatsoever on if my husband will start the class next week/if his clearance has been approved. Anybody have past experience with this? Would he be able to try and contest to complete the class with the understanding that he will not get pinned WO1 until his clearance is approved or is that totally out of the question?I guess that whole "hurry up and wait" saying is SPOT ON! Sincerely,a very frustrated wife. Quote
Lindsey Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 It sucks, but it will happen when it will happen. That's just the way the Army works. He could start next class or he could start in 6 months (yes this has happened to people I know) and he will likely not know until the day before. It's just the way it is. Quote
apache123 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Lindsey-Thank you very much ma'am- I appreciate your insight on this. Here's hoping he gets his clearance and starts class next week!Congratulations on completing flight school by the way! Quote
