d10
60s can take doors off if we feel like it. When it's 10 degrees in the winter we put them on and laugh at the 58 drivers dressed up like snowmen trying to fly around. Seems like the better way to do it. SBuzzkill
Stateside we put the doors on when we feel like it. Sometimes the mission wont let you and it gets pretty miserable once the temps drop even with the new heater and all the nice FREE gear. But it is what it is. Joe_P148
Although doors off is awesome, it isn't what defines the airframe. I wouldn't just pick a 58 because they fly doors off. The 58 is a great mission, not so great aircraft. Obviously the flight time in a 58 is double of that over any of the other aircraft. This is because, 1. They fly slower than all the others and take longer to get to their destination and 2. The mission requires them to fly at designated points for hours conducting zone / sector reconnaissance or ground team security. 3. This airframe is the cheapest to operate and the military is all about saving money. I really like the mission of the 58 but it's design really limits it's mission capabilities, that includes station time, range and speed, payload capabilities, performance at altitude and it's payload. The other thing about the 58 is that as we transition to peace time the mission for them and the 64's will be reduced significantly. Furthermore, the reconnaissance role will be overlapped with more advance UAV's both rotary and fixed. That doesn't mean the UAV will completely replace the 58 but it will seriously reduce its recon role in future operations.
