tradford Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I listened to the tower audio someone posted over on PoA. The audio of the helo pilot's distress call after the collision is chilling. All three on the R44 died. RIP 2 Quote

Unfortunately, rotating wings never do very well in mid-air collision. Edited October 24, 2014 by iChris Quote
RagMan Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I'm not too sure that image is appropriate Chris. I'm pretty sure I can make out a deceased individual in that wreckage. RIP. Too sad Quote
aeroscout Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 The big sky little aircraft theory has some sobering drawbacks. RIP and best wishes for comfort to loved ones. Quote

Too sadThat looks like the Cirrus to me. All three victims were in the R-44. Plus that image is from one of the three news videos in the links. Sad either way...... Quote
RagMan Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Well maybe when you have friends die in a helicopter crash Dnr032, we'll post thier bodies on the Internet for you to see. Then you tell us whether you think that's right or not. Common courtesy and respect, pal. Quote

Pilots who may see images of crashes like this weather or not they see bodies will definitely remember the image. It's an extremely effective learning tool like it or not. Quote

Then you tell us whether you think that's right or not. Common courtesy and respect, pal.I'm sorry that I have offended you, but I see a crashed Cirrus not an R-44. Plus it is the same image and video that was carried on several major news networks. It is an open source image. You suggested to iChris that he should not have posted that image because you could "make out a deceased individual" in the wreckage. All the news stories reported that the 2 individuals in the Cirrus survived and the 3 victims in the crash were in the helicopter. I am fairly confident that there are no bodies in the photo posted above. Plus, maybe you missed the point where I said, "Sad either way." Quote
tradford Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 Hearing the helicopter pilot's voice right after impact goes way beyond the images. I used to have trouble staying on the carb heat when I was early into my training. But watching that Robinson Safety video of the British couple dropping out of the sky in their Mariner (presumably from failing to bring in carb heat and not using proper auto rotation technique) slapped me so hard that I now check it too often. The close up of the deceased pilot and part of his wife was brutal. I guess you could say that I learned a crucial lesson from his (presumed) mistake. Not sure what to take from this one - I already avoid high-traffic airports. 1 Quote
RagMan Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 You don't see the picture of the mangled green R44 in between the storage units?? Probably better you don't. 1 Quote
Dnr032 Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Ahhhh, now it becomes clear....... The computer I was using was not showing the second image of the crashed R-44, only the image of the Cirrus. I just opened this thread with my iPad and I see the second image that you are talking about..... Unfortunately that is the digital image age in which we all now live. Sad and tragic. Quote
akscott60 Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Jesus f**k that was a horrible audio clip. Quote
apacheguy Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 This is why I file and fly IFR as high as possible as often as I can.... Quote
eagle5 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Robbie's can't fly IFR and even if we could still have to land sometime and chances are its going to be at an airport where the planes are. I've had my own close encounters with them. Problem is they just can't see us, hell we even have trouble seeing us at times! 1 Quote
rotormandan Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Apacheguy: I fly low for the same reason, to stay outta every one's way. Quote
eagle5 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Fly low and you just trade planes for wires. Fly over water to avoid the wires and a sea plane flies below you, or a Mustang on a low joy ride along the coast zips right past you at 500'...and not so much as a peep on the local CTAF! They are EVERYWHERE...stay sharp! Quote
sorcer Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Flight following, ADS-B and all of that is great but doesn't help much in terminal area controlled airspace like in this case. Perhaps when all aircraft have ADS-B out you can actually get traffic alerts that are useful in an airport environment. Quote
tonyairplane Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Still wondering: Since the tower controller tells the Cirrus to stay at pattern altitude until turning base, did he start down too early; or did the R-44 climb higher than it was supposed to? Also, I am still losing sleep from the audio of that poor fellow screaming on the way to his death. Quote
tonyairplane Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Did they ever figure out which one caused this? Quote
R22139RJ Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I just land direct at the hotel. Airports have no use. 1 Quote
tonyairplane Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Did they ever determine which one was at the wrong altitude? Quote
