Creep0321 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Yep! I would have taken a 47 but they were all gone. When did the 47's get selected? Quote
Cantankerously Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 When did the 47's get selected?Pretty quick. The Apache went first of second then the Chinooks were taken. Quote
dirtyfoot Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 What seems to be the reason is for so few 64 slots? Quote
Tradewinds Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 What seems to be the reason is for so few 64 slots? Think about it, there is no longer the option of the 58, a lot of 58 pilots are transitioning to the 64, and Congress is still holding up the transfer of 64's from the Guard to Active Duty so there's not the numbers needed yet to fill 64 slots that are yet to exist. Until the Army Aviation Restructuring Plan is allowed to fully Restructure, selections are going to be all over the place until the dust settles in regard to 64's Quote
Tradewinds Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 If it is allowed to continue... You mean. It wouldn't be the first time Congress screws things up. 1 Quote
Joe_P148 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 The restructuring has already started. If congress halts the process they will only be screwing up Army Aviation more than it already is. 2 Quote

walkerman180 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Both Iraq and Afghanistan have no low altitude IFR structure. Even if they did, by the time you did all the preflight planning for IFR, the fight would be over. Not to mention, the majority of the missions, whether it be attack or lift require pretty good weather to pull them off. You can't file IFR to COP Korengal or something. Don't have IAPs to some camp in the middle of no where. For the Apache guys, circling IMC while trying to identify targets thru the goo would be a mess. An accident waiting to happen. Someday the technology will get to the point where you can do a re supply to a mountain top fullly automated while IMC. It just hasn't gotten to that point yet. UAS = unmanned aerial systems AKA drones (for the army that's usually Raven, Grey Eagle, Shadow...) Don't have so much faith in your GPS. Taking off into IMC in peacetime let alone combat is pretty unusual for most army pilots. Imagine a GPS failure in combat, where there's no navaids or ATC to vector you. Theoretically you could do it, but the risk assessment would be off the chart. Plus our enemies have been known to be working on GPS jammers. Army VFR requires 3 miles and 1000 feet visibility, you really don't want to be out in anything less when the bullets start flying. So much good info on these forums, and acronyms for me to google haha. Thanks yall. Quote
Tradewinds Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 We stand on opposite sides of that fence I think... I have a feeling that when all is said and done, those on both sides of this fence will be disappointed with the final outcome. 1 Quote
Joe_P148 Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 We stand on opposite sides of that fence I think...Your opinion is biased though. The Army is all messed up right now because of the restructure. Just because you want to be a 64 driver and be in the national guard doesn't warrant congress stopping ARI. Furthermore, all the 58 pilots that are losing are getting 64 transitions are based off of the idea that guard 64s are going active. Guard units are not capable of deploying with the limited dwell time and back to back deployments which is exactly the demand placed on 64s. If you look at the cuts of the CABS and the increase in overseas rotations then you'll understand why 64 units need to be active. I know your gonna say guard unit deploy alllll the time. But the true story is they are not allowed to by law. This restructure is talking about 64s being gone 1 year with a year maybe 2 of dwell time, that's unreasonable and illegal to put those types of demands on guard units. That's why the 64s HAVE to go active to meet the operational needs of our Army. 3 Quote
WaterRooster Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 It still doesn't make sense though. Guard and reserve are typically called a strategic reserve. Why take all of your "reserve" 64's away? Not only do you lose the ability to have a reserve of 64s but you also lose all the drivers who get out and go to guard units. Guard unit experience is the same if not higher then the active units. I think like everyone is getting screwed here in the end Quote

I think like everyone is getting screwed here in the endBecause there will be no reserve 64s anymore. They are cutting Active duty CABS so much that the AH64 demand will be 1 year deployed to korea, germany, OEF or pacific and 1 to 2 years of dwell. You cant demand that type of dwell from NG without breaking laws In place. I'm not arguing with the level of experience, it's not about who is the most experienced. It's about who is siting in the active AH64 slot capable of deploying multiple times in multiple years. It is impracticable to ask a reserve force to put their civilian lives on the side every other year. You are making your arguments from a guard AH64 perspective. Try to think about this from a Army perspective. And the whole reserve thing, we have NG A model 64s that have never even deployed that hardly counts for reserve. Quote
apacheguy Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 The truth is that the whole 64 issue is political. There's really no such thing as a 'strategic reserve' in our doctrine. If the deployment tempo is too fast for the force structure, common sense would dictate increasing the number of soldiers/aircraft/units right? So why aren't we doing that - politics. Someone had enough political power to tell the army to start cutting endstrength without having the sense to come up with a plan first. So lots of soldiers and their families will get trampled in the fray and we'll have a bigger mess than we did before. You can try to logic this all you want but anything that's political is inherently illogical. Personally I'd like to go back to the good old days when the 101st had all 3 AH64 battalions in the same brigade, instead of parceling them out to the divisions to try to be 'fair'. That's how the French lost WW2, by divvying up their tanks as infantry support weapons instead of massing them like the krauts did. 3 Quote

AW1985 Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 It only gets worse. I've had a couple of good LTs in my 11yrs, but they were the exception. My initial counseling this year: 23 yr old LT sitting across from me fresh out of flight school. Me, 29, 11yrs of service, tracked, undergrad complete, grad work in progress, and zero issues at work. It's was painful trying to play the game while this LT tries to give advice and "mentor" me on my career and education path. There has to be a better way. What a joke. 4 Quote
